Why don’t we see any white dog poo anymore?

Because we don't give dogs bones any more.

From tormenting children on video, then paying people in India or the Philippeans to code the data. Just browse some child psychology journals – the basic research design is to ++++ with babies then report that they appear to be confused. Cheaper to outsource the data encoding now than to hire grad student to troll through hundreds of hours of banal shit.

So basically ****ing with small children’s future prospects for pointless research then. Science!

This was with monkeys rather than children, but the "Pit of Despair" experiment shows how off the rails researchers can go when they aren't supervised properly.

It gives you gravitas and makes you sound more intelligent. Try it next time you're in a meeting with senior management.

We had a pair of pigeon chicks in the woodshed this year, they looked like like ropey kiwi fruits. Proper lazy nest too.

The world's oldest evidence of bread-making has been found in a 14,500-year-old Natufian site in Jordan's northeastern desert.

What did ducks eat before then?

No idea on when the change happened, but they were called Red Admirables before. I've no idea whey it was changed.

Although delayed gratificantion in children is often cited as a good indicator of future success in life eg career etc…

The test that purported to show this was discarded as flawed. Delayed gratification tests in children have no implications on future career success.

Carrots weren't orange until the 17thC ...It's to with celebrating William of Orange. Before the 16thC it was unknown to English speakers. Although I think the French word "oranges" is older...

Might have used saffron. the English word for an orange is from the French, "Pomme d'orange" so people who knew French might have used that, but yeah, lots of folk would have probs just said Red.

The history of words for colours is endlessly fascinating

This little fella:

Would have been called robin orange breast but defaulted to red due to the complete lack of the word / definition orange.

Q: what exactly have poltergeists got against crockery and dining chairs?

So why aren’t oranges called reds?

Because the name orange describes the shape not the colour.

More interestingly though they probably were red before we had a name for orange.

Orange would just have been described as red

This is why some orange things are called red.
Red squirrels and redheads for example are more orange than red but red was the word we had.
.
Robin was the nickname of the redbreast, but the Robin bit stuck. Opposite of Jenny Wren, the Jenny got dropped instead

I think it was common to give human names to common animals in medieval Britain. But the bird was also called the Ruddock and Robinet.

Another interesting colour question. What colour was Homer referring to when he called the sea; "Wine dark"?

So why aren’t oranges called reds?

For the same reason we don't call bananas 'yellows' and windows 'clears'. Things can have names.

Is that perhaps not referring to a colour at all, just how dark it is?

Red, or more to the point, dark and inky and headed towards black. Its less a comment on colour than it not being clear.

Wine dark is also mainly a facet of the translation, it's better written as wine faced but in all cases means, dark, baleful and stormy, think of it more like a wine induced rage, eg darkness of mood, than a comment on the colour distinctly

The other thing to bear in mind is red is the colour of blood, wrath and violence. Often when he refers to the wine dark sea its in relation to being smote by angry capricious gods (and its very hard to find much which isn't a result of the gods and their disagreements even when it's not explicit). So whilst it's not necessarily red in terms of colour the referencing of red conveys the sense of rage and anger of the various gods trying to strike down Odysseus et al.

Well everything which looks black isn't actually black, it's just a very dark shade of an actual colour. Same as things which look white are just a very bright shade of something else. Nothing you'd want to get near is either completely absorbant or reflective of visible light.

carrots haven’t always been orange - they are variously yellow, white or purple - orange ones are just our current favourite variety

The question is are flat pedals less suitable than cleats, are they more expensive than better specification cleats?

If the answer is yes to both those questions then yes, they're the best pedals for a gravel bike.

Yes because screw spending £100-200 on new pedals and shoes just because the bike has curly bars

It did back in the 80s when a fave office prank was to remove the numerical buttons from a desk-phone and replace them in calculator positions. Looks normal enough to confuse some people.

The lorry one is actually due to weight ratings. Not tax as suggested way further up. I'd love to know the reason for that answer. A unit with a midlift or tag axle can carry more than a 4x2.
A tag is rear lift axle giving a shorter wheelbase for tighter turns.

Have you ever seen a photo of a squab (baby pigeon)? If your kids were that ugly, you wouldn’t want anyone to see them either!

northernmatt: What I want to know is why do you never see baby pigeons?

I had a baby pigeon that appeared in my garden looking half dead, fed it on Alpen and soaked barley died soup mix, lived in an outbuilding that I closed at night incase a cat got it, after a couple of weeks it spooked and flew up onto the roof just like that.
It flew off but came back for food for a few days, it had a white bit on it's back, around this time a load of pigeons started to hang around, I assumed to get the food but they stayed away on the opposite roof, they came day after day until one morning mine ventured over to the opposite roof, other end from the pigeons, one flew over beside it, and it had a white patch on it's back, another then joined them and after a bit of pigeon chat they flew off together, they never came back after that.

Why do people think that women who aren't white collar workers
should work for peanuts, or people who are self employed for that matter?

Baby pigeons in our garden are bigger than their parents and are as daft as a brush (eg sparrow hawk eats most of them).

What was the colour orange called before oranges had been discovered?

The fruit had green skin. And anything of a russet hue was called red, because orange was completely unknown.
I’ve become a regular viewer of QI over the last few years, this question has featured on there.

Well everything which looks black isn’t actually black, it’s just a very dark shade of an actual colour.

Many years ago I was on a day-release college course in Bristol, at either Bower Ashton or Ashley Down; I went to both, and one of the other students did wonderful illustrations with a whole range of black pens, felt tips and fountain pens with black ink, on heavy watercolour paper, then she’d use a plain water wash with a fine brush, letting the ink spread, making a whole range of different colours - reds, greens, blues, purples, the effects were stunning. Quite a skill in remembering exactly which particular make or version of a pen would go a particular shade of a particular colour.
