my broadband hub is downstairs almost exactly below my bedroom.at present i actually have the booster next to my laptop in my bedroom.is this the best place to put it?
how do you decide where the best place is?
Got a smartphone? Look for "wifi analyzer" (sic), it'll show you the signal strength as you move about.
no smartphone unfortunately, but i have noticed a slight improvement in loading web pages (although the gif thread on here is still hard for it to load quick/properly).
was thinking about placing it on the landing stairs as it would be closer for the signal to get to (will try that now actually).
Put it somewhere, test it, then move it. Is it better? Leave it there. Is it worse? Put it back.

FWIW, my pc is connected direct to router which speedtests at about 10-12Mb and the gifs thread loads fairly slow on that (I do have several tabs open but even so, ...)
woohoo that is a lot better (the gif thread loaded a LOT quicker and without any probs).
have found it's g spot people ๐

You're not.
Point is, wifi reception from a given device can be patchy. There's no one-size-fits-all answer to your question other than "measure it." When our engineers install a corporate wifi solution, they'll do a site survey to work out where to put everything.

It may be cached; a better test would be to load pages you haven't previously loaded (or, of course, clear your Internet cache).
There's no point putting it near your laptop, because chances are the WiFi reception from the laptop is better than the booster.
Sky include a placement guide in the quick start book that comes with the booster - have you looked at it? Find a blackspot in your home; put the booster just outside said spot. Problem solved.
You need to accept that it'll roughly halve the wireless speed on your network if stuff that previously had an OK signal started connecting to the slightly better signal from the booster, since you're doubling the transmission.
I've plonked mine in a waterproof box in the garden, thinking that it might be nice to have Wifi out there if the weather ever improves again.
have given in and converted my file to flv instead (i just cannot wait 5 odd days for it to upload in avi ๐
