So who's got some top tips on artistic pumpkin carving ideas?

I'm pretty good at drawing/carving, just down on inspiration this year. Off to a Hallowen party with a prize for the best jack o lantern, so come on guys, show me some of your best efforts and inspire me with your pumpkin butchery skills!

Last year's effort. Needed to be bigger really, but about 2-3 hrs of carving. Remember that you don't have to cut all the way through to get the effect.

Some smaller ones for the kids to carry around

Turn the pumpkin and use the stalk as a nose then use the pumpkins converging wrinkles to suggest expression

Those end-on ones are brilliant! I did the Death Star last year, not sure about this year.

I'm not , all the patterns for the more elaborate ones come off t'interweb. Pin the design to the pumpkin and prick the pattern onto the pumpkin skin then start at the centre and work out. Simples (it needs to be for me 😀 )

What tools did you use Carlos? I usually just use a couple of knives and obviously a spoon to hollow it out. I keep meaning to sharpen up a spoon and get some other tools for detail work.

Anybody use a Jr rhacksaw blade? It looks like this might work well. Also some of the above must use small picks and even dremels for the detail work.

Bolleaux to your modernity and pumpkins. Northern Old School turnip here. Not a swede, it's a turnip. Or a neep for the Jocks. Turnips are it.

We've got something a bit like THIS but use an old soup spoon for hollowing out , one of the tools in our kit is a little like a junior hacksaw blade. We also use a board pin (the ones that have a plasticy bit that stands proud) to prick out the patterns.

These were mine and the wife's efforts last year. Given she is American she introduced me to the pumpkin carving kits which make things much easier.

My attempt last night, in preparation for all the neighbours kids coming round tomorrow night. Way harder to cut neatly than I expected.

Started off with something basic....

[IMG] [/IMG]

Then inspired by the work on here decided to give something more 'artistic' a try, 5yr old daughter choose the subject...

[IMG] [/IMG]

Arrrgghhh, flippin photobucket keeps screwing with the rotation, I give up with it.

Inspired by some of the ones posted on here I carved my first ever pumpkin.

[IMG] [/IMG]

While I was scooping out his brains I dropped him on the floor, was gutted at first but then decided to work with it and make him the Tony Montana of the pumpkin world.
