Afternoon stw campers...
Looking for an awning that can be fixed to roof bars on a 4x4 as a permanent fixture so that it's there for spontaneous camping trips.
Never ever used one before but basically like.what you see on the side of camper vans.
Where do I get one?
What's the proper name for one to Google?
Any brands considered the best?
Are they spring loaded so you just pull them out or?
Any advice on the most ergenomic way to achieve this?
Thanks
Fiamma, Thule and Omnistor are the go to brands. Wind out awning would probably yield best results in a search engine.
You can buy them from many online retailers, the important thing is to get the right bracket set up for your application, the brackets are ordered separately.
They wind out/back in, with a removable handle.
Thule and ormistor are the same thing ain't they
I have a fiamma 4.5m on side of the big bus.
Can't help but think that one attached to a 4*4 will be both 2 low and 2 short to be much gouod compared to say a pop up gazebo with a couple of sides
Look at fiamma caravan stores. You hang their bag on fittings on your roof rack then pull out. Not left on vehicle all the time though
Cheers guys. The cars with roof bars must be about 6ft and I'm only 5ft10. It's for when we are camping for a weekend with the wee tent, if it rains we can cook and eat under it. Won't use it when we've got the big tent.
It's an interim measure until we can afford a VW Crafter and a doner caravan to butcher 🙂
We just chuck a coleman awning on the side of ours. Takes a couple of minutes to attach, I've modified the guys to custom fit the roof which makes it easier. Packs small, cheap and lightweight. Stable in the wind too, which the wind out ones aren't especially. Not as slick as a pull out awning but cheap and easy.
You might want one of these: http://www.driveaway-awnings.co.uk/awnings-for-rear-doors-on-4wds-mpvs/
The canopy fitted to mother homes do not have sides, they are optional extras so not much good as a "living" space, only used mine twice in 2yrs....
Get on aliexpress and knock yourself out, loads of different kit.
I have a Howling Moon roll out awning on my Defender.
It's been great, is adjustable in height/angle so would fit a variety of vans & 4x4's. Has seen use in heavy rain and high winds and has been fine.

Yip I had the howling moon too, great job when camping in Spain to keep sun off.
Kept rain off in Scotland too
Consider whether likes of a pop up gazebo or Coleman awning would be better

Thanks gents, those howling moon ones look just the job. How do they work... as in what's involved in pulling them out and putting them back?
It's in a bag, just unroll, unfold the poles and add guy lines if windy
think about where your going to store that howling moon when your driving.
i note they list their 2.5m awning as compatible with a land rover 90.
Very good but its longer than the car so leaving it mounted itll over hang and it aint gonna go in the boot....
unless your 4x4 is something like a pick up with a full length roof rack then your going to be limited to a rather small awning. At which point a pop up gazebo starts to make much more sense.
