Dobbo, really? Part of the charm in my eyes. He is a proper chap, seems to be a really genuine bloke. Very skilled in riding bikes with motors and pedals and at spannering I think that's why there is a lot of guy love on here for him. He also has a bloody nice Aston.

Agh! Damn you being out of the country! I like Guy, I think he's a breath of fresh air on the TV i.e. not a plastic idiot. I will have to 4OD when I am back.

Eurgh... Overblown cheeky northern chappy relives the industrial revolution and someone describes it as a breath of fresh air?

Really?... I think an interesting bloke who is clearly passionate about the subject, talking about, and exploring, some of this countries (and the worlds) greatest engineering achievements sounds like a pretty good use of an hour on the sofa

Maybe we should have more X Factor instead? Maybe another series of Big Brother?

If you're such an expert on what should and shouldn't be on telly, and what defines 'a breath of fresh air', then what exactly should we be watching on a Sunday evening? What are your personal recommendations? 🙄

So what were/are you saying? We're waiting for your 'breath of fresh air' alternatives?

Monkey Tennis?
Youth Hosteling with Chris Eubank?

Do feel free to enlighten us on any original, alternative programming ideas you've had yourself.....

As I don't work in television production it's not really my job to dream up television programs. This does not change the fact that this program has been being made in various guises since the 70s.

To suggest that watching a man daub himself with grease and **** himself into a froth over steam engines is in any way a novel TV trope is utter, utter bollocks. Just because it's been two or three years since the last time this program was made doesn't make it a "breath of fresh air".

Monkey Tennis?

I'd pay a princely sum to watch that.

I understand this is the once great Sampras having a recent knockabout:

Crash. Bang. Wallop. What a video.

All legitimate options for 'breath of fresh air' tele I reckon.

Thanks for that Sam. I do indeed feel truly enlightened

So... you just dismissively slag something off, simply because something similar has been done at some indeterminate point in the last 40 years.

It can't possibly amount to anything more interesting than a northern (he isn't BTW) monkey getting oily, could it? You can obviously tell that from the trailer. Your incisive judgement is that sharp

But you don't actually have any alternatives? Well done. Thanks for your contribution. I'm sure the prime time schedulers will be beating a path to your door, to hang off your every word, and watch their ratings subsequently rocket

I just think in this age of dismissive cynicism (see above), then credit where its due. And after watching this....

[img] [/img]

I personally think the blokes got something interesting to contribute, to whats looks like pretty compelling subject matter. Some people's utterly negative, and condescending attitude just ****s me right off at times. That's all

Really looking forward to this. I like his attitude and it makes a change from all the other cr&p.

When is the boat thing on again? Both attempts I have made to watch this have been deleted by the bloody kids to make way for Dr Who, Merlin, X Factor or other such drivel.....

Looks like it could be a good series.

Better to have a petrol head present a show like this rather than some footbal or X factor type person.

As a massive Fred Dibnah I kind of like Guy, a perfect choice to present these sort of programmes. I reckon even the great man himself would doff his cap in appreciation.

He worked proper hard. I live on that steam line and know some of the volunteers who run the line, they say he was genuinely interested and worked dam hard on the line not just the train

He lapped me about four times at the last Hit The North. I lapped binners once. I don't know what that means.

Maybe binners seeing more of Guy's arse than me led to him having heart palpitations.

FANTASTIC PROGRAME, should be made compulsary viewing in all schools to give the children a taste of real engineering, that is still with us now.

Oh and rails are not made from wrought iron theyre made from very hard steel, and also the rail keys are put on the outside of the rail when in the chair not on the inside,as shown in the programe, and there are still a lot of blacksmiths around, not just a few as protrayed in the programe.

The one thing the gets me with him, is that he wants to be a working class hero, and fair play he doesn't exactly come across as work shy. However, he's very rich thanks in no small part just for wearing Dainese leathers.

But he got the deal for wearing leathers after he won races, which is totally different to being a presenter on a tv programe, its not like he is cameroon or bliar saying he understands how us plebs are dealing with failures of the ecconomic climate at the present time, and that we are all in it together.

he's very rich

Source?
You do know the story behind his Aston Martin, don't you? You know he sleeps in the back of a transit van on a beach at the TT, don't you?

I'd say he's got better riches than money anyway. He's a happy man and he loves what he does.

He's not a natural, polished TV presenter, no. And that's why people love him.

The very rich quote comes from a guy I know whom races in bsb-he didn't tell me that he was rich, but he did tell me that he was paid a million quid by Dainese (that sounded like a lot to me tbh) I don't want to put him down too much, I enjoyed his progamme and would rather watch him that a Jake Humphrey style media clone any day. I just don't buy into this whole working class hero thing.

Does it really matter? If he's making money for what he's doing then good on him, some people should be so lucky getting to do what they love daily and being paid well for it. I'd rather see him on my TV than some of the ****s in motorsport

If he can keep me interested in a programme about steam trains then he must be doing something right. I think he's a bit of a no nonsense, man of the people type legend.

He's probably not short of a few quid, no, but so what? He still reaally is a lorry mechanic, bike racer and MTBer. And just a little bit hatstand. 🙂

Do Dainese, and the like, tend to chuck massive amounts of cash at people who aren't very good?

So to summarise...

Man paid lots of money for being really really good at what he does

Hmmmmm... revolutionary stuff

He's quite charming to watch but I can't really work out if he's presenting the show or whether he's the subject of it. It flutters between being by him and about him.

It's such a shame tv burp isn't running just now- this show would be gold mine.

There's a difference between wealth and class. You can be working class and rich; you can be middle class and moderately well off. You can be upper class and poor.

indeed - it frequently upsets the STW massive when they discover how much money they could have been earning (and earning it for longer) without their degree. A truck mechanic (frinstance) could be pretty darn wealthy without a racing carreer and a sponsorship deal

Did anyone count the number of times he said "grafter(s)"?

I didn't, but it was too many.

Apart from that, it was a good show. Oh, and a mild disappointment that Liza Tarbuck wasn't doing the voiceover instead of the actor I always get confused with Bernard Cribbins.
