? A large percentage of my friends, associates and colleagues have iPhones, a small amount of those, me included, read the guardian.
What does thus even mean?

Are you sure people didn't just buy the first iPhone because it was excellent, and have stuck with it. My dad has a random HTC, it's awful. I don't judge him on that though, it might be fantastic to him. We don't really have a conversation on it.

Why, how? Eh?
Having also read a review on the latest Macbooks, which you can't even upgrade the RAM beyond 2gigs without ripping the thing down to its component parts It makes me wonder what they're playing at.
What review was that?

Numbers are wrong but this is the one where the RAM is soldered in and the battery is bonded to the case and the Al Case is bonded to the glass screen in a way that makes it un recyclable and tough to maintain.
Just like in the iPhone 4/4S (and the MacBook Air), proprietary Pentalobe screws prevent folks from accessing the machine’s internals. That means you need a special screwdriver just to remove the bottom cover.
As in the MacBook Air, the RAM is soldered to the logic board. Max out at 16GB now, or forever hold your peace—you can’t upgrade.
The proprietary SSD isn’t upgradeable either (yet), as it is similar but not identical to the one in the Air. It is a separate daughtercard, and we’re hopeful we can offer an upgrade in the near future.
The lithium-polymer battery is glued rather than screwed into the case, which increases the chances that it’ll break during disassembly. The battery also covers the trackpad cable, which tremendously increases the chance that a user will shear the cable in the battery removal process.
The display assembly is completely fused, and there’s no glass protecting it. If anything ever fails inside the display, you will need to replace the entire (extremely expensive) assembly.

I took the back off my 2012 pro and upgraded easy enough. It was just a small torx driver.
Do you really need anymore than 4GB ram let alone 16gb?
Apple are pretty damn good with their warranty and out of warranty after care. They have always sorted me out in store on the day.
There are two separate things:
1. The amount of RAM
2. The user serviceability
Item 1, the OP was just mistaken.
Item 2, clearly a problem for people who like to mess about with the guts of their computers.

Is it the new Retina one? This is what the article was about.
Plenty of people need more than 4gb of ram easy to eat that up on photos and video etc.
I'd have 16gb when it gets a bit cheaper but then in my PC or laptop I can just swap it when I need to.

2 is an issue when the SSD fails, or the screen fails, or the battery fails or you want more RAM than you could afford on Day 1.
Just get a new one though and toss the old one into a landfill as it can't be properly recycled.

Thing is, in order to get thickness down to the absolute minimum, several manufacturers are resorting to these kind of engineering tricks. Something we will see more and more with the emergence of the Ultrabook market.
The latest Asus Zen Book Prime has a sealed case, making the memory, SSD and battery non-user replaceable. This is not a isolated case, and I think is going to become the norm...much to the chagrin of memory manufacturers.

Yes. Have 16 in my MBP and would certainly use 32 if it was available. Final cut/photoshop/raw processing software all make use of the extra ram before using a scratch disk (have an ssd one of those too to make it even faster)
My mrs has an ultrabook and you can't even get the damn thing open.
The problem is we all want thinner and lighter but don't want the issues that come with it.
The 15" non retina is upgradable just fine.
Having also read a review on the latest Macbooks, which you can't even upgrade the RAM beyond 2gigs without ripping the thing down to its component parts
And yet my iMac has a little cover on the bottom specifically so you can add extra RAM very easily. I bought 8gb for £45 and slotted it in next to the OE 4gb in seconds.

Correct. Which is why I've had iPhones for 3.5 years.
Whoop just preordered a 32GB black
I like the new phone's features, there is now nothing in it between all the manufacturers flagship phones....pick one you like from the Galaxy S3, HTC One series, iPhone, new Lumia etc and they'll all do the same thing and to a high standard....the winners are us the consumers.
However, what irks me about Apple as a company is the marketing and advertising, the use of supposedly cool names for technology that is/was already in existence and often on other phones...but Apple give it the title 'retina display' for example and everybody gushes over how awesome it is....it is a backlit LCD screen made by LG with a high pixel count...thats all, its not new technology, its not some incredible creation by Apple that the others cant figure out....same with their processors...the 'A6 chip'....what does that mean?...is it dual core?....what speed is it?....what is the manufacturing process?...is it 40nm like the 4S?, in which case its out of date already and will suck battery life especially on 4G or is it now built on a 28nm process like most 2012 chips?....in which case, cool i'll take one cheers.
I know a lot of that tech stuff isnt important to the casual user but i like to know the spec of the device i'm buying, everybody else seems up front about their specs....lists the hardware in plain english, not Apple....with Apple you get meaningless terms like 'retina display'...i find it infuriating, particularly when some cretin at work asks if my phone has a retine display and i then have to explain that there is no such thing and the screen on his iPhone is an LCD screen....pedant?....yes i suppose i am.
Mosey, where at please?
I would imagine here.
I did it on the iPad app as the store was down.

I was up that Lunnon day before yesterday, went to Park Royal, then got taken to this bike shop I was visiting, then somehow wandering around looking for one of those Underground things to get back to sanity I blundered into that Regent Street and an Apple store, so given it was the glorious twelfth, thought I'd see if I could catch a glance..
Not a chance, the place was full of foreign students, every machine occupied in face time foreign gibberish with some similar twerp at the other end, and or gamers locked into some global apple gaming store contest, one wonders how Apple do manage to sell anything.
No sign of that iphone 5, anyway if you just edit your sign off you can save the cash thus..
Sent from my iphone 5
Car phone warehouse have prices for 02 and orange for new and upgrades.
Might wander down there in a bit as o2 themselves don't seem to know anything.

My Windows PC can take 32GB 🙂
As can an iMac.
Stop comparing Apples to...erm..oranges.

How big is your penis though?
anyone else laugh at the email that went out today ?
"Pre-order your iphone 5. iphone 5 , the biggest thing to happen to the iphone since the iphone"
id strongly disagree with that statement , talk about overinflating your own trumpet.
I would quite like 16GB though, I would like to run VMs with preconfigured software environments for work purposes, but with "only" 8GB you end up with two 4GB machines which isn't enough for the environments really.
We being ripped off again,
U.S.prices;
16GB $199/£123.54
32GB $299/£185.62
64GB $399/£247.70
U.K. prices are £529, £599 & £699
Plus that email went out after the first batch had sold out.
Are there any issues with getting one from the US? Are those prices not with a contract?!

You realise you are comparing US prices when bought with an expensive and restrictive 2 year contract to UK prices for no-contract sim-free?

Not this again. The US prices are for the phone WITH a 2 year contract. The UK prices are for SIM FREE phones.
Also, directly comparing US to UK prices on anything is risky, as there are so many variables like sales tax etc.
We being ripped off again,
No you're not. There's no obligation to buy one!
"the biggest thing to happen to the iphone since the iphone"id strongly disagree with that statement
I'd say the jump from 3GS to 4 was slightly bigger, because of the huge difference that Retina display made. But this one has to be a close second, no?
No didn't know that, so there're cheaper on an upgrade with your existing provider?
Judging by the response to this topic, apple's iphone is still the market leader by some way. Can you imagine all these replies to a new HTC or Samsung.
No didn't know that, so there're cheaper on an upgrade with your existing provider?
Same as any other mobile really - you pay less upfront if you buy it with a contract, but you will probably end up paying more overall (unless you are very careful with tweaking your tariff).
Can you imagine all these replies to a new HTC or Samsung.
I certainly can't imagine so many iPhone fans showing up to say how rubbish the new HTC/Samsung is 😀
I quite like the S3. My brothers got one as a work phone, and it's got a lovely, albeit mahoosive, screen.
Can you imagine all these replies to a new Trek or Cannondale[s]HTC or Samsung[/s].
😉
I quite like the S3
Yep, it's a really nice bit of kit.
As I said earlier, if I hadn't already drunk the Appley-flavour Kool-Aid then I'd have a much harder choice to make these days.
II thought only Apple had fans, Samsung/HTC just have users?
I certainly can't imagine so many iPhone fans showing up to say how rubbish the new HTC/Samsung is
No-one's saying the iPhone is rubbish, we're saying it's a nice new version but not a revolutionary omg amazing moment, and we are taking the mick out of people who do seem to think that 🙂
Just as a heads up to those buying sim free. The new 5 needs a nano, and not a micro, sim.
it sounds like you'd have to get the SIM cut down to size for the 5
I don't think this will work, as it did with original sim > micro sim. As the actual chip on the nano sim is smaller.I am surprised this bit of news has flown under the radar. I guess mainly as Apple neglected to mention it.
Edit: Gah. So quoting a quote works in preview, but not when publishing? Shitty bbpress.
shipping times now slipped to 2 weeks for unlocked from the apple store
2 hours in,
4S took 22 hours to sell out...........
