[Closed] PSA: Chromebook users, remote desktop now allows control of Chromebook

A recent ChromeOS update implemented remote desktop on chromebooks i.e you can now remotely control a chromebook. Previously you could use remote desktop to windows/mac/linux but not a chromebook.

Handy for supporting elderly relatives who use a chromebook etc.

Install Chrome Remote Desktop from the Web Store on both machines and off you go.

Message ends.

cheers. I previously used remote desktop going the other way, i.e. from chromebook controlling my W7 PC.

Now they just need to add an android version so I can fly my computers from my phone ๐Ÿ™‚

EDIT: *checks security code*

Tsk what's the world coming to - Stoner not knowing about something to do with Chromebooks/Chrome/Google ๐Ÿ˜† It's not even new - it must be at least 6 months old, probably more...

It's brilliant on a tablet - Windows on your tablet.

You get the hang of it really quickly. I use it loads when I'm away from home but want to access something on the home network - I can just add it to my google drive via RD and then access it directly on the phone.

thing is since I do everything (even on my home PC) in chromeworld/googleverse I rarely dont have access to everything on every device already making remoting pretty redundant.

But for freaking out Mrs Stoner when she's in the office and Im down stairs, this is worth it's weight in gold ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think the most use I would get is from launching windows media centre to tell it to record something on TV while Im away.

Remote snooping - remote into the chromebook and enable the camera to see what's going on ๐Ÿ™‚

just had a look and it appears its already in my chromebook apps. time to have a bit of fun with mrs expunks chromebook, thats if i can understand it ๐Ÿ˜€

just clicked it, it says i need to give permission etc etc, ok i gave it, it then asks me which account. i have 4 gmail addresses plus my wifes in the choices. am i choosing my main account for that, or the account i want to [s]hack[/s] have remote access to?

what sneaky ideas can you think of for me to put into play?

You just need to set up remote access based on whichever account you're logged into the chromebook with - you do that on both the chromebook and whichever other device you're using.

The kids have an xbox that acts as a windows media centre extender in their oom. there's no aerial in there, so the xbox can relay live tv from the PC tuners as well as relay recorded programs. We're pretty much tied to WMC until we get superfast BB, which may be coming in the next few weeks....

Oh and there's not much sneakiness you can do - if you're remoted into a computer/chromebook, there's a popup on screen to tell you that someone is logged in (though you can drag that almost off the screen).

I haven't home to try it on my chromebook yet - I'm assuming it's similar to on the PC where when you installed the chrome RD plugin, it then asked you to log in...

doesnt seem to do that. It just shows me my W7 PC is available for sharing, but doesnt let me make the chromebook available for sharing Except on a one time basis I think.

Thanks Stoner. I am a huge fan of Chromebooks and actually now use it instead of my laptop for almost all things, including work. I recall some time ago you were a fan and that was one of the reasons I bought one. I have recommended them to other people and this remote app will help me support some of them (family only!)
As an aside I am Head of IT at my organisation so I am familiar with tech.

The version of chromeOS you are using is old then. Remote desktop is available on the stable channel.
