Congratulations TLR

I don’t think they’ve upgraded GTA V no.

I'm considering just biting the bullet and ordering an Xbox Series S. It has a lot in its favour.

Pretty much all my games are digital (purchased or Games Pass)
I'm not that fussed about having the greatest 4K resolution
I'll still get the benefit of the SSD
The Series S is nice and compact.
I can get one TOMORROW!

BUT

My XBOX ONE is the only thing i still have that can play a physical disk for DVD or Blu Ray. There will be a day when I still need that.

Conflicted

And Forza Horizon 5 comes out soon

I've got the Series S for exactly the same reasons your considering it.

TBH, I don't care about absolute resolution. My TV will show 4K HDR regardless of the native output, no it's not as nice as native 4k, but it's negligible in real life. Same goes for FPS, my TV maxes out at 60. I've sat in front of £2k monitors in work trying to compare 30/60/120 FPS and honestly, as far as my old eyes are concerned, I can't really tell the difference. Call me cynical, but honestly, too many people are over concerned about on-paper stats, and not how good games are, it's bleeding over from PC gamers who love the hobby as much as the games themselves.

The enhanced games look great, the Xbox One games look better than they do on Xbox one and they all load quicker which is great.

The real downside of the S is storage, 300GB or so usable isn't really enough, I've got an external SSD so I can run all the Xbox One games from that, and the enhanced games (of which there are very few) from the internal. Eventually though, when more enhanced games come, I'll probably end up buying the £200 expansion drive.. but I think that will be true of the S or the X.

As a new PS5 owner, is the Playstation Plus monthly subscription worth it / necessary? Coming from a PS3 I hadn't heard of this, but it seems that GTA V online requires it, and it seems that other games push you that way too. Is that also true now of all online games on the PS5?

I know it's not a lot of money, but I bloody hate being forced to subscribe to stuff monthly rather than just buying something.

100%

Games get bigger, more and more games have a S/X specific release. We've hit limits on our S, but the Seagate exclusivity is apparently about to come to an end so hopefully some alternatives available in the next few months. The current 1TB expansion is ~£200 with the odd offer of ~£175. Seagate website now showing 512GB and 2TB models on top of the original 1TB but you can't yet buy them.

One factor worth considering on the simplified basis that 512GB of high-speed Xbox storage costs ~£100, is that half of the cost differential for a Series X can be attributed to storage, so if you know you need to expand (and you will) you might re-evaluate the Series X costs.

You don't need it unless you want to play online. But TBF it is good value for all the free games they release each month. And coming from a PS3 there will be loads of games for you to experience for the first time.

But don't pay full price - have a look around for deals.

The real downside of the S is storage

I bought a Series X over the S for two reasons. Well, OK, three, the third being "because I could." 😁

The first reason was exactly this, I've filled a 1TB Xbox One so halving the storage whilst increasing game size by an order of magnitude was a madness to my mind.

Second, MS have promised (licence permitting) to upgrade One games to X|S level for free when available and I have a bunch of titles still on shinydisc.

PS+ sub in my opinion is worth it, there have been some good games some months sometimes not so but then that's subjective. Plus you will get 20 I think it is free games straight away for the PS5

+1

Also, PSA, Deathloop was about £25 off earlier in the week and I’m enjoying it.

Thanks all, sounds like yet another sub is necessary.

Takes me about a month to get the hang of most games!

But once you have downloaded a game, it's yours to keep for as long as you have a subscription (if you meant that you thought you'd lose the game after the month it was available for free in the store was up).

tlr as above the game is yours to keep, you can delete the game from your console if you need to make space and just reinstall again at a later date as long as you still have a sub running

@mildred - one of these type of trackers might help...

https://www.independent.co.uk/extras/indybest/gadgets-tech/video-games-consoles/xbox-series-x-uk-stock-today-b1950435.html

its kinda pot luck tho, as soon as one appears, get it bought!

On another note....

XBox game pass users.... Forza Horizon 5 looks sooooooo good! And we get 10 hours early access of BF2042. That along with the recent back4blood... what a time to be alive!

What's with all the "Cash on Collection" listings on ebay.

Smells kind of scammy. Who are they scamming though? ebay, the buyer or both?

My Son, has just started his first weekend job, working for Argos in a Sainsburys store. Argos are completely out of stock of Series X / PS5 at the moment, BUT there are shelves of them in the back of his store, it's embargoed stock for Xmas, I guess they'll dump them all into stock at the beginning of December or something. I don't know if this is just an Argos thing, or a Sony/MS thing, but they're taking delivery of them most days, but can't sell them yet.

Elden ring trailer was released yesterday - game not out till Feb though.

Looks fantastic imho but I guess you can't really tell much from these things. I'm a bit doubtful that Souls + open world can be made to work but we shall see.

I have been an Xbox fan exclusively, I was introduced to halo at uni and that was that.

My stepson is a PS die hard, we’ve clashed heads over this a lot! Some things however, are more important and I secretly bought a PS5, and have been practicing fortnite.

We got our first VR in duos the other day. That moment was totally worth it ☺️.

I have Battlefield on preorder and the day off to play it (more like half a day after the updates).

Fair to say, I am loving the PS5!

Elden ring trailer was released yesterday

That looks amazing!

Sounds scammy. Just buy from a retailer.

Flight Sim deleted and Forza Horizon 5 on its way down (Awaits patiently for expansion card price drop as per ^^^).

Argos do a drop every 2 or 3 weeks, they’re due another soon. They’re one of best bets for getting one.

It’s a little bit of a rip off that Curry’s package. It will only allow you to proceed through checkout if you sign up for their credit plan.

From my old PS clan on Facebook:

Anyone still looking for a PS5?
I picked one up at the end of September for a mate but due to circumstance beyond his control, he decided to pass on it.
I've held on to it, its still unopened and just sitting in the original delivery box. I was thinking to gift it him for Christmas, but I don't think I can make it up to his neck of the woods.
So thought I'd offer it to any oaps looking to upgrade. It's the disc version, first generation.
Curses.

I've also got a spare one. Came last Friday from amazon. Disc version. 450 (RRP) plus a donation of your choice to my kids school PTA. But I won't post it as last time my nerves were shredded. So pickup from Wirral. I've now bought 5 for friends and family - I've somehow got the knack of buying these things but every one I've bought has been for someone. This one was a random one I bought strolling home on the school run! Anyway, apply within etc. Obviously you'll get the amazon receipt.

Phew - apparently *the* only thing the boy wanted for Christmas this year was a PS5. Somehow we found someone who knew someone who could get on a list and have one put aside when the next batch came in.

Was dubious at first as it was meant ot be the end of Nov and then first week in Dec and it finally showed up late last week. Unboxed it and got it all updated and set up then back in box ready for Christmas Day. Looks good and I was impressed how, so long as the PS$ was on the same network, it pulled all the saved game data across and stuff. Very clever.

Next year he is not allowed a present that is so difficult to sort!

@Kato - looks like the may have gone already! Certainly have in any store with 30 miles of me.

Well done on snagging one - can’t believe after a year they’re still so hard to get hold of…

EDIT looks like delivery still available though. I know someone looking for one so will let them know.

Yeah, try actually buying one. Argos' system takes a while to settle down once they're sold out.

Other thing is, it might be a regional drop.

For the PS5 owners - do they have a particularly loud fan? Mine doesn’t make any grinding noises or vibrating it just seems really loud.

Normal or is mine knackered?

@Creg. The boy's has been totally silent. Brand new out the box yesterday and has been on pretty much constantly and not heard the fan at all.

Ours is pretty much silent, the fan might make a small amount of noise when things get busy, but it's not at all what I would describe as noisy or loud

Ah poo.

Guess that’s me going through the returns/repair process.

Mine is so loud I can hear it over headphones even just when playing something fairly untaxing. I’m used to gaming PCs and the noise they can make so would have expected a console to be a lot quieter.

Yeah, I'd second that it's "pretty quiet". Certainly not loud enough to be heard through headphones!

@Creg Where do you have it located? If I close the door on the cabinet ours is in, the fan blows like a good un. Open the door a tad and it quietens right down. Open it totally and it is quiet until the game content gets demanding and then the fan is on again.

It needs good air flow.

No cause for concern though, I'd be more worried if the fan didn't come on when under heavy load tbh.

@twonks Console is sat on a desk, probably 1ft from a wall on one side and 8 inches from a wall to the back of it so plenty of space for airflow. When it's just idle it doesn't make a sound.

It's probably just me being over the top. If I'm being honest I spend most of my time on my Series S and the PS5 barely gets a look in. Series S hardly makes a sound so I'm probably used to that.

Please note the subtly faded out cable attaching the headset to the machine. I have an original PSVR and it is very good fun and would love the new one however I really, really wanted it to be wireless like the Occulus Quest.

It's only a single UBC cable compared to the breakout box of the old PSVR - I'm interested but I'll wait until full release and some reviews, and also more games - there's a few that interest me but GT7 needs to get PSVR2 support, that would be a huge incentive and reason to buy.

I understand that, but I don't see why that is much better than the current version - there is still a cable attached to a box than can get tangled up, pulled, twisted etc.

Doesn't bother me tbh, I wouldn't be dancing around with it on and if it was wireless you've got the added complications/weight/cost of batteries in the headset, and it's expensive enough as it is!

It doesn't bother me either (when I am using it) but, having a house full of teenagers who get it out when their friends come around to go mental playing Beat Sabre, I am in a constant state of crisis waiting for the whole lot to get ripped out, TV knocked over etc.

Of course having a wire does help in one huge respect though - it means others in the room can watch what is going on.

Lots of Xbox games discounted up to 90%, eg Red Dead Redemption 2, Star Wars, Lego, Assassins Creed. I'm going to get a few and set them aside for a rainy day or 10.

Does anyone happen to recommend an external XSX SSD (optimised for XSX)? I can't justify buying the official Seagate one but 1Tb for backing up downloads to save re-downloading will do the trick.

LOL. ER still on my wish list but having put 65+hrs into DS3 earlier this year, I'm loathe to invest that much time in another game.

Having said that, I did recently pick up RDR2 new for £15 and can now see what all the fuss was about. It is insanely immersive. Shame the old thread is closed.

RDR2 is up there as one of, if not my favourite game of all time - with the other being another Rockstar game, Max Payne 3.

R* just have a knack of creating single player games with characters who you actually care about.

I borrowed a mates PS4 to play RDR2 as I didn't have one, it was the only game I played on the PS4.

Ghost of Tsushima is my go to game at the moment. Absolutely beautiful world in the offline game and incredibly addictive and adrenaline fuelled online gaming. Just wish I had more friends to play online with as co op is vital to complete a lot of the online stuff.
