I'm up for a promotion at work that will probably come into effect at the same time as our annual salary review (private sector). In a company that's doing well, would people expect to get what they would typically get at the annual review (5-10% based on the past few years) plus a bump for the promotion (~10% the last time)? So is around 15-20% total increase reasonable?

And no, I'm not willy-waving, I just thought STW often has good advice on such matters! I'm also aware that I should consider myself lucky I'm getting anything/lucky I've got a job/lucky I've not been molested by a badger/etc.

Is it negotiable, or are you just telling us about it?

We don't typically have room to negotiate annual increases but there is some flexibility around promotions. I'm just trying to figure out what a reasonable offer on their part would be, as currently I'd feel a little disappointed if it only came in at around 10% total. However, I'm aware that I may be living in la-la land, so wanted some input from people who've been in similar situations!

In a previous company there was the dreaded 'Indian Promotion' where you were given a new job title, loads more work, responsibility over things you could not control and no more money as you can live on the prestige of having 'Manager' in your job title (EG Coffee cup replenishment manager)

This has been my experience 🙁

I'm now actively reverse engineering it, seeking a less responsible position whilst retaining my current salary. Think it'll work?

It will, of course, all depend on the company.

My experience of larger private companies is that you usually don't get a pay rise for a promotion as pay scales overlap. One of the reasons that I actively refused going for promotion at my previous company. They sell it by saying your ceiling for pay is now higher. I prefer the same money and less work/hassle/politics.

In my current, much smaller, company I got a promotion and pay rise last year out of the blue via a phone call from the CEO. I was apparently doing more than the job warranted - to me I was just doing my job.

Smaller companies tend to value individuals more, and pay/rises/promotions reflect this. Larger companies see individuals as resources and they have rules to reflect this and stop people getting a dual pay increase.

I think a 20% pay increase given the circumstances is being optimistic.

😀 Nah, your thread just reminded me that I wanted to ask about this! I'm not getting as much of a kicking as you are though (yet).
