As if I need another project!
I’ve seen this
I’ve got a mate with a good 200tdi engine that I could easily swap myself.
The vendor sounds like a decent sound guy. It need a little bulkhead repair but that too is within my skill set.
What I’m not up to speed with are the volatile prices of these as projects. I can’t go and see it myself, so thought I’d turn to STW as I know there are a few Land Rover enthusiasts on here. I’d buy it to keep it long term as it’s about as uncomplicated a Land Rover north of a Series variant, but much more usable.
What would be a reasonable punt of a bid? I’m currently the underbidder.
I'd suggets looking at the cost of working models of the same age and condition.
Go with "completed listing" to see what they actually went for.
Then consider what your time is worth!
IME, often it's worth just completely replacing the bulkhead with a decent s/h one (which will probably be stolen, but that's another story) rather than attempting to weld to rust. Once the water is in, the bulkheads quickly become waaay more trouble than they are worth! So budget for that to be safe
(swapping over is a bit of a PITA, but actually very easy, as you can leave all the drivetrain in place, and most of the body work too, but you'll probably have to cut the wing to bulkhead bolts out because they will be rusted to heck although you might find they are so rusty they just pull straight out btw.....)
oh yeah, thirdly (sorry) how "good" actually is your mates 200?
I've seen plenty of "yeah, it's perfect mate, little bit of smoke on start and she's a beaut" engines over the years that are best described as "totally %$££^'d".....
Love the original colour and 80's range rover rostyle wheels they came with briefly. So many have been repainted from 80's schemes and alloys. Be great with a set of period door stripes.
Get it bought.
This guy does 200tdi mounts
I was going to post that it was an impractical money pit that would never repay the time you put into it, then I noticed who the OP was and remembered some of the other adventures in McGyver Land Rover fettling.
I will just say "bid away"
In 2012 I bought a project 110 unseen off Ebay. I gave £1200 but that came with a rotten chassis but a working engine (though that has been binned). It was also a very early one (1983) and I completely rebuilt it onto a galv chassis over a period of a year. Since a chassis now costs about £2K (I gave £1350 back then) I would be happy to take that up to about £2.5K and still be happy that it would not lose me money long term. At that age they are very easy to export to the USA where they can be worth huge money if original so you may end up in a bidding war with someone who knows they will be able to make a good profit. Go for it. Set your limit and see what happens. There are not many original ones left that represent a relatively straightforward resto-mod.
Early one like that, sat on a galv chassis (assuming it's still good - I've seen poor quality ones rot out), I would say £2500 a couple of months ago.
What I don't know is, whether the Covid-19 situation has humped prices or not. I've certainly seen more 'project' type vehicles for sale of late, which would suggest prices *should* be down.
For eBay though, you can get random highs and lows. I sold a 90 that needed a new chassis a few years ago for £500.

And it was still on the same bent chassis for 6 times the price the next time it was forsale.
Tbh I'd bet that bulkheads ****ed.
After our discussion last night - is that an 11l high mount turbo ..... Does your mates engine have the manifolds and turbos.....cause they ain't looking to be there. .. ££££££ if you can find them
As above - an ex Discovery 200tdi as shown in the advert needs a bit of faff (and a Steve Parker kit) to make it fit and then it will never be genuine. An ex Defender 200tdi fits straight in as LR made a conversion kit for owners of earlier 12NA and Turbo engines BUT the air cleaner brackets, exhaust manifold and a few exhaust mounts are like hens teeth nowadays.
A 300tdi can be made to fit but needs the mounts rewelding on the chassis and ends up with loads of non standard parts to make it work.
The easiest is a 3.5V8 or a nice well sorted 2.5NA. I had a late NA in a 110 that I rebuilt with a gas flowed head, Donaldson WOLF filter setup and pump tweak and it happily pulled a loaded Ifor box trailer. Bulletproof steel head, no turbo and a character that would suit an early 90.
Back axle needs changing to earlier drum or change to later front stub axles so the drive flanges are the same size.
Is the chassis a replacement or was it the original patched to buggerery scabby chassis packed full of mud that was thrown in a galv bath?
Either way its a time and money pit!
Lots of good advice there. It seems the borked engine and my pal’s engine are both Discovery units. As has been said finding the Defender manifolds is tricky and costly.
I love the period look with galvanised cappings and old school doors and that brown
Common sense should prevail
I too can remember when new galvanised chassis were a tad over a £1000, that made a swap viable, but they are more than double that for a 90 now and near three times that for a 110
What I don't understand is why farmers with landrover grave yards just don't list them on eBay. They go for silly money.
If anyone is interested this is the resto-mod story of my 110 back in 2012 (hopefully it is all accessible without having to register with the forum)

Well one thing is for sure they ain’t makin’ any more - get it bought 😀

Indeed. Whoever said honesty is the best policy obviously never sold a land rover on eBay 😀
It looks tempting but even if I had the time, the energy and a good workshop I wouldn't buy it. It looks like a headache waiting to happen.
You've really, really got to love Land Rovers to buy one of that vintage and condition! 🙂
I had a look at the Steve Parker conversion kit last night, £700 and then some. If the original engine had been from a Defender and not a Discovery the correct manifolds and turbo would be there to swap over.
Sadly I think that was the nail in the coffin. I’ll keep my eyes open for a 300tdi project.
I personally dont think its worth messing with earlier than a 300tdi unless its a genuine factory 200tdi or you are happy clacking around in a 2,5NA/12J. Defender 200tdi engines are all worn out now and command high prices and also use the LT77 gearbox. Many parts are NLA
A 300tdi engine is virtually same in either a Disco or Defender variant (IIRC the air cleaner pipe/mount is different), parts are still available and it has the slightly better R380 gearbox.
Rusty, the sad thing is that I have a couple of very good 300tdi engines and a good R380 box.
A pal just contacted me to say he has a Defender 200tdi engine. Might be game back on. It really depends on what it finally reaches on eBay
