To put it in Van-Tams terms it's like a mountain bike ride, you're going up hill working hard, but the top is now in sight and you know soon you can take a breather before finally getting toward the descent you've been looking forward to.

Put it another way - he's ending a secondment which had been running since 2017 and returning to his day job (well, not the same job but same employer).

I think he's earned the comparative rest of going back to his old job. Imagine not only the responsibility, but having to handle briefing after briefing having your words 'twisted' for Political ends and not to mention having to be part of Johnson's team, it must have been serious graft for him.

He has put in a huge shift no doubt not sure most folk would want that much pressure in work.

He's moving to an academic post, those don't happen overnight, so guessing it's been in the plan for a while.

Probably the perfect time to bring on a fresh pair of legs as well, maybe shore up the defence a little to hold out for the point.

We are at the point where big academic appointments at that level get announced - either for the new (April) financial year, or for the academic (normally August) financial year. We’ve just seen a reshuffle of senior Uni posts at our place.

Good luck to him. Pro VC won’t be an easy gig.
