Anyone know the score with touching up paint on a car?
My wife wants to sort out some scratches on the car bumper - she's sanded and filled the relevant areas and has spray cans of lacquer and paint. She wants to know if you need to put a primer down as well?

The damaged areas are relatively large, as paint flaked away when she started the repair. 1'' by 2'' would be about the biggest.

Better taking the bumper off the car - well away from your car and other cars if you must and spray whole thing

Better still Take car to a body shop and have em spray the bumper - its not always as expensive as folks think doing it privately, insurance quotes are always high due to hassle.

Bumper and door resprayed on the parents merc e350 coupe was 450quid which i thought was a bargain. As it looks like new.

Touch ups of the size your talking will look awful.

Also Guarantee if you touch up a plastic bumper with a rattle can - in 6 months it will have orange peeled.

Thanks TR. I guess now she's done the filling she'll probably give it a go. Body shop is a good suggestion if it does end up looking poor.
