An old colleague has IT dev roles going in HK and I have expressed an interest. He has asked whether I want perm or contract as both are possible options. From what I gather there is no relocation assistance so thinking that contract is a better bet. Just wonder if anyone has any experience regarding this and the sort of questions I should go back with?
Is your hourly rate the same for both options and do the benefits differ (sick pay etc.)? In this country contracting vs permanent in IT roles is mostly trading off job security (hah) and benefits for a higher rate of pay (obviously some other factors are involved to...)
Housing allowance is common in HK with permanent jobs so worth checking. I think it is tax free. Also how tax is much lower than uk tax in general
Whats included? Perm gives you a lot more security and help I'd guess - ask for both offers then decide.
Ok thanks. Seems like I need to understand more regarding the possible offer before making a decision.
+1 for TheBrick's comment - Tax will be a big factor - presumably you'll be paid in HK rather than UK? If in UK then contractor rules have tightened up over the last year or two. Definitely worth checking before committing....

LOL!!! 😆
Yeah, had an ex who made a decision based on about 20% information on a job - guess how that went.
As above! You need a lot more detail here.
Cost of living is the cheapest in HK. Oh, and a markedly different working culture to the UK. Loony tunes long hours are standard.
Without any relocation or accommodation allowances/assistance, I'd walk away to be honest. I'd also be pushing for flight home allowances, too.
I know it sounds stupid, but I always find large companies don't want to commit to numbers. Would save everyone a lot of time if you knew upfront what the deal was. Maybe, that should tell me it's not a goer.LOL!!!
Agreed. Large corporates tend to favor single individuals and want to get away with basically not offering anything. I think that is the norm these days for dev roles.Without any relocation or accommodation allowances/assistance, I'd walk away to be honest. I'd also be pushing for flight home allowances, too.

It's a job half way round the world, they are offering options as to how to pay you so how can you decide without info. Don't ask don't get and all that.
