I'm possibly going to post some cranks to Australia. Are there any do's and don'ts I must adhere to and who are the safest/best/cost effective carriers?

I'd make sure they were clean, but apart from that no particular effort needs to be taken AFAIK.
I would just parcel them up and use Royal Mail.
