POLL -Tree lights? Colours or white only?

It's critical that we all understand the correct lights to put on our tree and also what it means if we get it wrong. So, this is a chance to help each other out with guidance and taste. Lights of colour or plain white?

We may follow up with a poll on flashing/steady.

Explain your choices in this thread.

It's this kind of hard-hitting cycling journalism that keeps me coming back for more.

White for us; mainly as there's less chance of gaudy clashing with the assortment of baubles, tinsel, kids home-made decorations and other paraphernalia that gets thrown at the tree.

Does seem a bit Grinch though, so have been mulling over coloured varieties going forwards.

You need another option:-

• Whatever works when you drag them out of the loft and untangle them!

I think it would be valuable for us to upload pictures of our trees for the judgement of the community.

I'll go first. Tree PLUS favourite bauble

Lights, white only. Warm white obvs.

Tree-wise. We never get an actual traditional tree, but then we're pretty dangerous and edgy.

Rather, we find interesting, large, wind-dropped branches, arrange them in an old chimney pot and then the other half hangs half a ton of jangly, sparkly things all over it along with the aforementioned warm white lights.

Looks pretty rad usually.

Saying that, We've not done one this year as we're off to Anglesey.

Warm white. I think 1500 on our 7 foot tree. Lights wrapped from trunk to branch tip rather than just round and round. Do the squint test to avoid obvious straight lines. (I worked for a Christmas Dec install company for a couple of Christmasses)

No tree or decorations in my house apart from two Xmas cards but if I did then I’d choose multicoloured lights with sparkly tinsel and gaudy baubles just to annoy the middle class white is right sensibilities.

If Mark has done this properly, he can show us the correlation between plain white lights, how long we've been riding, and he can then tell Yellow Jersey who to email with a better offer

Due to pre-Xmas lurgy our tree is still out in the rain, and the lights are still in a tangled mess at the bottom of that cardboard box, so no pics yet. This is the latest our tree has gone up in a few years, but would still be too early for me bah-humbugedness. Plain white btw

This is either part of a complex social experiment, or the result of an office bet. "A fiver says you can't get them to tell you their age AND post a picture of their Christmas tree"!

Don't understand coordinated trees. Ours looks like an elf has vomited on it. A Christmas tree needs to look tacky, not classy.

If your tree isn't lit up like a Christmas tree then it's not a Christmas tree.

Here's mine. 600 individually addressable LEDs on a 5ft tree. Like a games console from the 80s.

What is the correct form of address for an LED? "Your luminescence"?

We don’t have a chopped off conifer. Why grow a tree just to cut it down and then shred it.
We normally have some branches taken as part of pruning with lights and decorations.
Each to their own.

Warm white for me. Scarred by a 70s childhood of too many lights on a plastic tree and foil covered paper chains pinned to the ceiling.

Pure unicorn vomit here. Used to do classy white lights with silver and glass decorations, but my daughter eventually got to an age where put her foot down with a firm hand and insisted on reform.

Favourite bauble is a tough one. Not sure I can narrow it down between the aubergine, the 'shroom and the festive cephalopod.

Multicoloured and it absolutely HAS to be incandescent. Multi-coloured LEDs have ruined Christmas. They look awful.

Warm white for me, but also a completely excessive amount of em, it's the only light source in this room. I've been told I like a gloomy tree and it's maybe true, all white light and dark decs and tinsel, russets and red and purple- very rich, not very cheery!

I think I want coloured lights to look like trees from my childhood, coloured led can be lovely but it's rarely quite right. I think they've got better for this recently?

Mixture of white and red LED's indoors, white and multi color outdoors.

Not many baubles though as pulling them down, with the tree following is the cats favourite winter sport

I havent seen incandescent for years! If (if!) a bulb blows can you still get them ?

At epic towers the tree is finally dressed, plain white lights, and minimalist brown decs as dictated by Mrs Epic. I'm liking it actually.... 20251221_204422.jpg

I used to be firmly in the 'white light' camp. Now with nostalgia for my 70's/ 80's childhood hitting harder every year I'm campaigning for coloured lights on our tree. unfortunately with little success.

This year we have gone for white lights for the tree due to buying a 7ft tree instead of a 6ft. Last year we used white and multi coloured lights on the tree.

I used to be in the white lights are B O R I N G camp. My eyes, literally, have seen the light. Now, I'm happy to allow people to indulge whatever light type they like for their Christmas decorations.... although having said that, I did find the neighbours flashing lights in the front garden a bit much on the way up the garden path.

Are your interior walls all white? Is your kitchen monochrome? Is your car concrete grey? Then white otherwise colours.

All warm white and loads of them on the tree. We bought a 6' tree this year the string of lights wrapped up and down it 4 times. Due to decorating our tree did no go up until 23 evening which is a win for me! Must get busy in December again next year to maintain this. Mrs Sandwich requires lots of lights on a tree I think that there's a 1000 of them in the string, she's happy and as a result my Christmas stress is much reduced.

can't call the ornaments as they are hand-made by grandchildren and I'm not going to pick a favourite.

IMG_1147.jpeg IMG_1148.jpeg

Other tree decorations are from visits abroad going back years along with some very chic glassware that Mrs S is in charge of. One year there was a disaster where 6 Swarovski stars were broken when the tree fell over. Same year as the flooding in the North and West of the country.

I read something recently about the trend for white walls and natural wood surfaces being because it's calming and the world is too hectic or there being a lack of hope. In the past we've gone for bright colours as part of periods of hope and creative energy.

Dunno if all the white xmas lights this year relate to that.

White xmas lights are a bit boring but I do like that type of warm, low level lighting generally. It's a fireside sort of thing. Anything's ok as long as it's not flashing like an 80s disco, because that is too hectic for me.
