Just arranging a new water supply connection and need to give my customer service pipe specifications in terms of diameter and material.

The meter will be supplied on the mains side with a 32mm supply.

What is the standard specification for a trench-laid supply from meter to property? 32mm and MDPE?

cheers

also - have done some digging online and Im a bit confused about pressures.

If Ive been told that I will get a connection from mains to the meter of 32mm (greater than the minimum of 25mm due to the size of the property) then what would be the effect of fitting 50mm pipe from house to meter?

I assume pressure will drop until it gets into the house and back to domestic diameters? What is the advantage of having a stretch of pipe greater in diameter between two stretches of smaller diameter Even if one is the mains end?

A larger diameter pipe will result in lower a headloss (drop in pressure) between the meter and internal stop tap (or wherever the diameter changes). How much of a difference it will make will depend on the length of the supply pipe.

ahh. cheers. I assume that's to do with "friction"?

Fortunately its only a 20m run so I dont think it needs to be more than the 32mm that is on the way in to the meter.

So just to confirm, is 32mm OD MDPE OK for connecting the meter to the internal stop tap?

I've just put the data into a hydraulic modelling package - assuming that you are going to use a maximum of .2l/s and the pipe run is level the difference is negligible (.1m).

I can't see a problem with fitting a 32mm to 25mm reducer but I'm not a plumber - my involvement with pipes tends to stop a the distribution main.
