[Closed] plumbers: central heating pipe work Q
During a recent loft conversion the plumber ran his plastic pipe work to a radiator through the wall void between plaster boards. It now "ticks" pretty much continually whilst on in the void. Why is this? What can we do to stop it?
It's the pipe expanding and contracting when heating and cooling I would expect.
As its in a hollow wall void its being amplified and making it more noticeable.
If you can get into the void run some old bits of carpet round the pipe as it goes between the dwangs/ stud work. Probably just expanding and contracting.
bugger, its all sealed up in plaster and paint now, bloody annoying!
Not much you can do really.
Short of opening up the void and insulating the pipes, then filling the void with loft type insulation, and making good again.
Get an aerosol can of white grease (always a useful maintenance tool for a cyclist anyway) and insert the nozzle alongside the pipe then saturate the area with white grease, which runs then sets.
As above, insulate the pipework.
Fairly common complaint on NHBC remedial work
Drill a couple of small holes in the plaster board near the pipe ,get a can of expanding foam and inject in,if the holes are close enough to the pipe when the foam expands and goes off it should lock off the pipe plus add additional insulation.
A small bit of filler work a and a spot of paint on the wall and all should be good as new.
It has worked for me in the past.
