I just started the petition "Keep 30 hours free childcare if parents lose their job due to Covid" and wanted to ask if you could add your name too.

This campaign means a lot to me and the more support we can get behind it, the better chance we have of succeeding. You can read more and sign the petition here:

Thank you!

Isn’t there a platform where if you get enough signatures it gets discussed in the commons.

Why do you need childcare if the parents aren't working?

Why do you need childcare if the parents aren’t working?

Job interviews, voluntary work to prop up our underfunded health and care sectors, exercise, sleep or just a bit of time to sit and fret over the sheer uncaring nature of people?

Are most people loosing their jobs due to COVID single parents with no family? Only reason I can think you would need childcare is for an interview.

It’s not free money we will all end up paying for it, so while you can enjoy time with your kids it’s the best solution for the country

I’m not against it but there is already both early years funding for low income families and 15 hours free childcare for 3-4 year olds.

This won't go anywhere due to the 15 hours as above. There is simply no need for it to be extended to 30 hours. Sorry FuncyDunc has pretty much nailed it. Providing it just for people who lost jobs to covid would also be grossly unfair.

I think those against are missing the point this is about the 3-4 year olds loosing out on education. the secondary effect of loosing the nursery place is that if you do manage to get a new job, you don't get the hours back until the start on the the next term. So if you are offered a job you probably would be unable to take as you have no child care. This just keeps the unemployed on universal credit, as they can't accept employment.

Not providing a decent chunk of childcare free at the point of use undermines the long term economic growth and development of a country and makes it very difficult for people to get back into work.

Do you mean the funding or the place at a specific nursery?

You probably should have given a lot more detail into the reasons why rather than asking people to sign a petition with such little information.

Have been unemployed with small kids so understand how much difference this could make to getting back into work.
This isn't generally a forum for the career 'dole bludger' (my assumption anyway) - many of us know first hand that getting work takes a decent amount of graft. Not something you can do with kids at home while the other half has to work full time to keep things afloat.

I was a stay at home parent and was able to get back into work using the 15 hours funding to help me hunt jobs and attend interviews. Lots of stay home parents manage this difficult task every year with what is currently available.

I'm not against extending it from 15 hours but I don't think the OP has really justified why this is required over what is already in place.
