I really didn't like Eccleston... He was great at the serious but tried too hard for the wacky, felt like 2 different characters. To be fair I guess the scripting/characterisation hadn't really hit its stride either.
I thought that was the point. When he first met Rose he was quite harsh, having spent too much time on his own. Rose humanised him over the course of the series to the point a bouncy and more energetic Tennant took over.

Mmm, to be honest I thought it was a constant. Probably the best actor that's ever done the job but... nah, didn't quite work IMO.
