I read it in the early 90s and it was set in the near future.

A group of kids, who’s parents were already in space,  go to space in a home made ship made from a hollowed out meteor and lots of bits from a space ship scrap yard.

It was aimed at early teens I think, sounds a bit lame but I loved it. Cannot remember what it was called though!

It might have been part of a series of books.

No one I’ve asked had managed to come up with anything so let’s see if STW can come up with anything...

No, I remember that tv programme but it’s not the same story as the book I’m thinking of.

Wow, I remember this fondly too!  First book is only 99p on kindle.  Time to relive a small part of my youth!
