In the mood for buying a playstation.
Anybody know of any good deals on ps4 at the moment or should i buy a used ps3? Lots of ps3's around with bundles of games included
Not a big gamer just fancy a bit of GT or similar now and then
Is the 4 so much better?
I've recently got a 3, as a non gamer for a long time the graphics have been a bit of a surprise. The PS4 looks amazing, but I think for me at the moment it's not worth the extra.
Things to bear in mind, sports games are mostly old now, no F1 games since 2014 although FIFA is still going. The other thing is that a lot of the online features are now dead, at least on the games I have.
Additional games are brilliantly cheap though, I got 5 games from CEX for £9 the other week, PS4 games are still all over a tenner - what a scam 😆
Well, I've got one I don't need...

The 4 is worth it.
What games will you be playing? As that might dictate what bundle you go for.
There's not really any backward compatibility (other than PS Now) so if you've been out of the loop for a while you'll get great value from a used PS3.
It also depends on what appeals - if you're wanting to play online with people then there'll be a much bigger pool of them on PS4. But if that doesn't appeal then the older GT games will be better for you anyway - the newest GT Sport is mostly an online experience.
Just playing through the Uncharted games, The Last Of Us, Journey, the Batman games, GTA 4/5, Red Dead Redemption - that could fill a winter or two for an outlay of about £120.
I haven't had a playstation since PS1 - but i loved playing gran tourismo on it.
I'm really not bothered about playing online.
Can you play older games on a PS4?
Can you play new games on a PS3?
If i get a PS4 do i have to play online?
I know nothing about them these days and haven't been on one for about 15 years.
i wasnt all that interested in playing online either when i first got mine but its incredible!! massively expands the use of a single game - millions of folk still playing GTA5 all these years later. i have the new COD, hardly even touched the campaign mode yet...
Get the 4. the 3 is yonks old.
I picked up a PS3 this time last year purely for GT6. Coupled with the Logitech Driving Force GT wheel it's good fun for a comparatively small outlay to a PS4.
It's not had as much use as I had hoped though, it seems I am not much of a gamer at heart.
I've a PS3
Downsides:
The graphics are incrementally inferior. There's no new games.
Upsides:
Still just as good as it ever was. Games still work online and still people to play against. Games are pennies on ebay, so you can work your way through COD from the beginning for less than the cost of the latest installment (which ironically is back to the beginning, thankfully seeing as the last time traveling one hurt my head trying to figure out hat was going on).
If you have to have the best and you have friends to play with online, get a PS4. If you can live with the graphics and only want to play campaigns or against random people (or your friends still have PS3's) get a PS3.
Is it worth the extra for the 1TB PS4?
If you’re planning on digitial downlaods, are keeping games awhile then yes but you can upgrade one easily anyway with both interrnal and external drives.
Tidy, cheers. 🙂
Was in a very similar boat to OP until recently.
Luckily picked up a cheap PS4 Pro as I wanted to try out HDR gaming on a new huge telly - then thanks to STW hive managed to pick up a new copy of Gran Turismo for £18.
I was hugely disappointed by the last PS3 GT offering, I feared the worst when GT was reduced so quickly on the PS4.
Fear not, its excellent. It looks amazing on a big screen, and I've been hooked since starting playing.
Do you need to go online to play? - No. But it will expand your fun by at least 100%. The standard single player mode is great, albeit on a smaller scale then previous GT titles - but very easy to get into.
Going online is brilliant. Only downside is I sometimes have to wait up to 10mins for a match-up to be confirmed due to the seemingly pedestrian game lobby, but its worth the wait. Nothing compares to a frantic 25minute full on race in which you pip Pedro or Hanz to 3rd place on a final corner apex of perfection.
I have an old PS3 and on the very rare occassion that id fire it up I found that the online support and gameplay was no longer there (on my old titles at least).
On PS3, CoD Modern Warfare was hands down my favourite title, and I also enjoyed CoD World at War very much, so I have high hopes for CoD WWII on PS4.
I'll eventually pick up a cheap copy of GTA too - but I have plenty of time to continue to get into Gran Turismo (and its pending expansion pack) and CoD first.
No doubt I'll get bored and stop using it in about 6 months time, but for now at least, im finding it a great bit of kit.
In summary, your main question of 'is the PS4 so much better?'
No, I think the gap between them is much smaller than I had hoped - but I think thats down to my Nintendo-Sega-8-bit origins and expecting a sea change on overy new console release.
The gaps are smaller now on new releases, but the difference is concentrated on home hub/media playback.
You are future proofing to a degree with a PS4, its not backwards compatible with PS3 titles though (unless playing online via PlayNow) - plus the online gaming content is going to be much better on a PS4.
