Any suggestions for some camp food outwith the purpose bought packs? I've saw porridge with Jaffa cakes and instant mash with chorizo. What are your one pot camping wonders. Easy to prepare and carry and loaded with calories.

If a mor long term trip than a night or 2 I like to carry a bag of ready made seasoning. Salt, pepper, mixed herbs, cajun, dried garlic. Obviously not good for breaky but good for most other things. Even toast.

Bacon, egg and beans in a wrap. Warm to eat and hold and tastes great.

I take the eggs in a container out of the shell.

Hot dogs, home made slaw, brioche buns little refillable squeezy bottles of mustard and ketchup.

Epic. A bit faffy but epic.

Gin and tonics and malbec to wash it all down.

Custard powder for enhancing puddings. Goes well on flapjack or crunchy bars or with dried fruit if cake is deemed too fragile for the trip. Caused massive jealousy in a hut in Corsica on day 4 or 5 of a 7 day trip when we had custard with crunchy bars for pudding and a French team doing the same route had dry biscuits again. They asked what it was and when we answered 'creme Anglaise' they just just gave us that should have known look.

Evaporated milk (unsweetened) is good for short trips. 1 tiny tin thins out to a full pint of milk.

Batchelors pasta n sauce and savoury rice (or supermarket equivalent) make easy cheap meals that are usually better than the outdoor instant stuff but do need a bit more gas to cook.

Tuna in 'catfood packets' is good. Pitta bread last a couple of weeks for longer trips. Jam can be decanted into plastic pots for spreading on the bread.

Fresh parmesan also lasts a few days if you take some ready grated to go on pasta. Tastes good and plenty of calories.

Don't discount taking cheese and pickle sandwiches for lunches on short trips if you can avoid crushing them. Good normal food and plenty of slow release carbs etc. that last a couple of days.

Depends on how you're carrying it.

I find carying enough calories while bikepacking really difficult. Even eating 5x instant meals a day is sometimes only ~1500 calories. It more for the morale boost of having some real food. Actual calories are then worked out at ~300 per hour of whatever can be bought in the shops twice a day.

I aim for over 3000 calories a day and a weight of under a kilo a day

Everything is worked out around this and I take very little that contains water the weight must also include packaging. It also has to remain palatable for 5 days and contain decent amounts of fibre and nutrients. Carbs are 4 calories per gramme, fats 8 or 9 IIRC. You also need a mix of quick and slow acting sugars. Minimal tins .

Breakfast is instant porage pots, lunch is oatcakes( bread on the first day), cheese and olives, dinner is cuppasoup, pasta and a sauce of some sort and then snacks are halva, dried fruit, sweets, cereal bars, chocolate, nuts, trail mix

I find the olives make the cheese and oatcakes remain palatable for days on end. I am trying to develop rice dishes as well but struggling to do so

We have first breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, first lunch, second lunch, a wee snackerel, afternoon tea, dinner, supper ( IE we eat every couple of hours)
