Seems like the various mountain rescue teams in the Lakes are urging folk to avoid this accident blackspot yet again. It got me wondering if its time to start sticking a sign up at the bottom and top pointing out that the gill itself is very dangerous and that the correct (and less obvious) path is actually to the side and over Middleboot Knotts. With the increase of traffic on scafell over the last few years the wrong track is actually looking more and more like a viable option and luring people into difficulty.
Trouble is that there are a number of ways of getting into trouble in that area (Broad Stand, anyone?), and I don't know if folk just have less judgement on when to back off these days, but yes, if MR are getting called out to incidents there regularly, maybe a message on a large rock telling people not to go any further would be a good idea.

Some good advice here but I am guessing folk don't do the research.
