@Elshalimo - Rik is correct. Gulfoss in Iceland last Thursday. -10 if the temperature gauge in the hire car was accurate !

If you ever go; I'd recommend self drive rather than being stuck on a tourist bus; though the roads are ... interesting ... in winter !

Aye second that re a self hire in Iceland. Better and probably much cheaper than the tourist bus.

A couple more formal street portraits that I am really pleased wtih. These are formal because they have been taken with consent and the subject has posed for the picture (rather than it being a candid).

More impressive than the photo is that you're riding down the Garburn Pass on a hard tail!

This is Lotus 78 John Player Special, the F1 car that competed in 1978 driven by Mario Andretti. It was one of the first F1 cars to focus on the underside aerodynamics and used skirts to create negative pressure that sucked the car into the road. It sits in the lobby of the office of a client of mine.

Actually my mother in law. She was widowed a few years ago and this scene was in my head before we took the shot. I thought it interesting where she chose to sit on the bench, which influenced the way I elected to composed and process it.

I had a really enjoyable day in London yesterday, focusing entirely on street portraits and trying to use on camera flash in a creative and flattering way.

I found a covered alley way just off Wardour Street that had a white ceiling and a stainless steel side pannel which worked so well for bouncing the flash around.

I got three that I'm really pleased with in this locatin, including one which while a random approach, turned out to be a model. Can you guess which one is the model?

Lots of the photos I take of my boys are simply snaps to record a moment, but this one really caught something for me:

Was it the young bloke?

Yes although the young woman with the braids was also a professional dancer so knew how to hold and present herself to an 'audience'.

It's quite intimidating shooting a professional when you're merely an amateur; I've read this in other people's experience, where they hire a model for their own photoshoot and suddenly feel the pressure to know what they are doing, to have an idea as to what they want and know how to direct that in the model. The experience really highlights the difference between just taking a picture and making a portrait. Anyone can point a camera at someone and press the shutter but there's so much more to making a portrait than that.

Pretty pleased with this shot taken on the shore of Bassenthwaite yesterday. I heard the roar of the jet as I was composing the shot, clicked the shutter, then looked up to see where the jet was. It was only afterwards that I noticed I had caught it on camera!

I love following this thread. Some fantastic shots, especially from the regular posters.

Thought I'd share one of mine. This is from Elie last night as I went out on the off chance there would be an aurora, but it wasn't strong enough to see clearly with the naked eye although the camera picked up the faint green glow on a 30s exposure. Instead of trying to capture the weak aurora I turned my attention to the lighthouse, and played around with various compositions until I was satisfied enough with this shot before going home with numb cold hands.

Pretty pleased with this shot

**** me I'm not surprised! That's stunning. It coule be even better but it's just a suggestion. Think about trying a different crop, less panoramic, maybe even just traditional landcape 5x7 so that you put more emphasis on the jet - currently though it's an amazing capture, you almost need to do a double take to see it. I'd crop at the point where the snow capped mountain top runs out on the left.

The other thing to consider, and I would understand if you were reticent but in this case I'd encourage you to do it as you've got license for it, is to clone stamp the jet to a position lower in the sky and then remove the original. Try to get a little less blue sky between it and the horizon and then leave the jet smack bang on the intersection of the vertical and horizontal lines of third.

Andy, Greg, if you haven't seen this already:

Thanks for posting this. I already follow Lens Culture on my FB account and so I have seen this but until today I've not thought about entering. Ironically though, I just entered seven images this morning. I've been reluctant up to now as you actually pay to enter, so it's not really a competition, but you do get a review and feedback from a professional photo editor so I thought it would be worth it for that.

Andy, Greg, if you haven't seen this already:

I like this; I like the way the light from the lighthouse catches and illuminates the pavement in the foreground.

Really don't be. If you like you're pictures that's all the matters. If you like your pictures but you want to get better then anyone will offer helpful insight and suggestions and anyone who ends up being a prick about it is, well, just that. I'd rather be a mediocre artist than a prick any day of the week!

Bedds,as Geetee says above don't be intimidated,as the title says Post pictures you're proud of.
I enjoy seeing what people post & I'll occasionally post something myself,if you're proud of a photo then post it,it's not competitive!

I disagree: I think the beauty of the shot is the relative anonymity of the jet.

I will have a look at the portrait link, thanks for that.

Geetee i'm always reminded of that quote, maybe someone will tell me where it comes from?
"The more i practice the luckier i get"

Re pro vs amateur, "pro" is not the same as good. To my simplistic reasoning it means you earn the majority of your living from taking photos and maybe you have an additional skill set, marketing, social media etc. There are plenty of amateurs who are as good if not better than pro's, they just don't earn their living from it and don't call themselves peofessional.

I popped round a friends house this afternoon for a quick cuppa and his persuaded his wife to pose for me (my friend has done so quite a few times so it was only fair). It's a simple window lit portrait that took about five minutes to get but I'm really happy with the results. The colour and toning is particularly pleasing.

Don't know when I took this tbh but was developing a couple of rolls last night in the kitchen sink and accidentally reset the timer so had to take a guess at the time remaining. Quite lucky to get anything at all.

This one is from an early 50s viewfinder camera which has been knocking around in a drawer for decades. Lets a 'bit' of light in and you can't actually see what you're shooting as the viewfinder's broken. Good fun though.

Couple from a brief episode today in Brighton, which was otherwise both fruitless and demoralising. I get so many rejections in Brighton compared to London for street portraits. Three people today wouldn't even acknowledge me. Fortunately these two did.

Had a suspicion it was, but it's very well balanced with the light coming into the tunnel. Looks like it's purely available light though.

The flash is being bonced off the roof of the tunnel and we're stood quite close to the entrance, but close enough in that we are stood in pure shade. I dialled down the amount of flash compensation by about two stops and metered just for the available light on his face to get this.

I take your comments as a complement - many thanks if that is indeed how they were intended 😀 I'm growing to like the look where the light is added but still looks natural. However for something truly brilliant have a look at this:

Portrait by Paul Van Bueren

This is pure available light which is remarkable given the catch lights in her eyes and the balance between how subject is lit and the background. Indeed, if you have a few moments have a look at the rest of this photographer's work because he's utterly brilliant:

Not posted in this thread before but thought I would share this from January. OK technically not the last month but I haven't got out with the camera much the last few weeks.

bob_summers love the shot of your kid playing with your phone. Really captures the moment and is very atmospheric.

I do like the way that your Pentax renders pictures. It's like the best bits of Olympus and Fuji rolled in together.

Zaskar what do you think about the new FF Pentax, are you tempted?

Hi geetee

Thanks for the comment, been really pleased with switching over to Pentax 12 months ago. It would have been so easy to have gone the Nikon/Canon route, but I really liked the spec on the K3 body and the price was great to (plus it's nice to have something a little 'different')

another thing that convinced me to switch was that as Pentax build the image stabilisation into the body, you can then have access to all the amazing K-mount (and M42) legacy lenses that are out there, often at some low cost from ebay and photographic shops, etc. I'm slowly building a wonderful collection of beautifully built manual focus lenses that offer some stunning image quality and great colour rendition (the Morris minor shot was taken with a
SMC-K 55mm f1.8 that dates from 1975)

Another nice aspect of the Pentax is that most of the modern lenses have versions that are WR (weather resistant) so this along with the great weather sealing on the k3 body means taking the camera out in wet weather is no issue.

I'm tempted to see what the pricing on the FF does in the next 12 months - it does look to offer some truly fantastic spec. I might then either upgrade from the k3 or keep the k3 as back-up (another benefit of all those old FF compatible lenses I have been buying is that I can use them perfectly on a K1..)

Regards - U.z.

When I was looking at an entry level DSLR a few years ago the Pentax offering looked a clear winner. It's a shame they aren't more popular to give the usual duo more competition but many people won't look past Nikon / Canon unfortunately (and as such only recommend them to others as well!).

Some really good photo's up there.
