[url= https://www.flickr.com/photos/geetee1972/16131065702/in/photostream/ ]'Shingle Beach'[/url] at Goring by Sea.

This part of the south coast has a remarkable quality. It is both depressing and serene at the same time. I'm not quite sure how it manages this, I think it is a little like Blackpool! You have the excitement of childhood associated with the sea, coupled with the dreariness of experiencing it as an adult in a kind of 'this is England' kind of way.

One of my all-time favourite books, [i]When The Lights Go Out[/i], by Tanith Lee, plays on that, set in a slightly run-down SE-coast town at the end of the season, when the lights go out.
Great photos, btw, really catching that atmosphere.

The light and mist was amazing, some really striking views, I wish I'd taken the proper camera, the go pro is so hit and miss.

my shadow had a rainbow too

Yes i like those sort of shots geetee.
Find a patch of light and stick your subject in it.

I like the coastal shots as well, always plenty to see at the coast and great light.

A bit of black and white

Andy nice shot, great use of tone and light as ever. Where do you get your film developed?

Jad, there isn't a way to message via Flickr other than to approve of someone's work by making them a favourite. Problem with that is it can become embarrasing to fave too many!

I really like your work; some great landscapes.

pic of carbon bath tub, proud mainly because it was really hard to light and bring out the carbon weave without horrible reflections on the gloss clear coat plus the inside was essentially a curved mirror so a bit of a challenge lighting wise.

Looks like a juvenile Grey Heron who keeps coming and sitting on the neighbour's roof. Over the weekend he sat in the tree long enough for me to take a phone pic, then a small camera pic, then dig out the big (300mm f2.8) lens. Taken handheld @ 300mm

Here;s the view fro a P&S camera - as you see he's quite some way away

You see this is exactly why every time I ponder whether I shoudl try to take my hobby further, I realise that the pictures I take barely scratch the surface of the skill set you need to be a decent photographer.

I wouldn't know where to start with studio photography. Actually I wouldn't know where to start with anything that didn't rely 100% on the available light.

The skill needed to make this picture is far ahead of anything I can comprehend.

it’s just years of practice, mastering your tools and mini-problem solving. (plus an aesthetic visual awareness)
you could say that about most skills/professions/crafts

i wouldn’t know how to design and model a turbo plenum chamber and how to get it mass produced to a price point, to somebody that’s a walk in the park.

Love that last one. Reminds me of George SHaw's humbrol enamel paintings.

Not sure about posting my own amongst these obviously talented shots, but I liked this one from a couple of days ago in Bordeaux.

I popped into a bar on the beach front at Brighton to take my eldest to the toilet. I saw this doorway and just couldn't resist. It was as if it was made for candid portraits. He normally doesn't like having his picture taken but seemed happy to oblige in this instance.

It's January and you're project is doors? 😀 I like it.

Yep, I agree on the colour version being better. It's a Fuji X-Pro 1 and I have to say that while the shutter lag is very frustrating, the colour rendering is lovely.

As always, I come back to this thread to find yet more outstanding photos! I really wish there was a 'Like' button rather than the 'Share' one, there are far too many to really pick out.
Here's one I took the other evening at Oslo, Hackney, of the lovely, and criminally under-rated Gemma Hayes.

[img][url= https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7466/16104015087_d0f75c274f_o.jp g" target="_blank">https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7466/16104015087_d0f75c274f_o.jp g"/> [/img][/url] [url= https://www.flickr.com/photos/countzero1/16104015087/ ]Gemma Hayes, Oslo, Hackney, London[/url] by [url= https://www.flickr.com/people/countzero1/ ]CountZero1[/url], on Flickr[/img]

Really pleased with how it came out, lighting was a bit awkward, but to my delight I had stood exactly where her head would block the direct light from the spot behind her, giving a rather pleasing 'crepuscular ray' effect.
Taken with my iPhone 6+, no post processing.

Had a wander down Portobello Road on Friday in between meetings. Quite a collection of characters down there. This guy really caught my eye:

Not to be rude by him but he definitely had a look of the grim reaper about him!

I'd say that was pretty remarkable for a hand held shot. I'm guessing you braced against a tree?

I'm no critic, but it simply makes me smile; it's got so much happiness in it. (My interpretation, etc etc)

I'll take a positive emotional response from an honest person than a bucket load of even positive rubbish from a critic any day of the week.

The pictures you've posted here are very nice and I can see what I think you also saw in taking them. They could easily be made even better with a bit of post production work. Nothing drastic; I'm not a fan of creating artifice (though impressionism is just fine, it's not the same as artifice in my view).

The first and second picture in particular would benefit from an increase in contrast. If you have Lightroom or an equivalent, try adding a classic 's curve' in the tone pannel. A google search for 's curve lightroom' will give you many tutorials. Also add a graduated filter to the landscape shot to bring the exposure down on the sky.

I wouldn't say I was particlarly pleased with this shot, but since I am quick to post candid street portraits of others, it seems only fair to post one of me.

As candid street portraits go, I was however quite pleased with this one:

Please note that the title is entirely and purely a decriptive play on words, nothing else.

Thanks for the advice geetee. I will admit that post production is my weak spot, so it's going to be something to work on this year.

Maybe for the first time on this thread I know where someone's photos are taken. AlexSimon's, heading towards slippery stones and Stanege edge descent if I'm not mistaken. I've got a day's tutorial in the Peak(s) sometime this Spring, so I might be able to post something decent after then.
Keep me inspired 'till then.

Took this whilst out riding on Saturday. Sadly this was just on my phone - would have liked it a bit better but still might have a play in Photoshop later...

How do you make these posts so that you can click for a bigger picture? Ta

There isn't much to look at in this picture, but I really like it because it captures a really simple moment between mum, dad and their son. It's perfectly 'candid'; no staging, posing, no artifice. Just a family.

After seeing so many pictures of the Christmas Wheel etc in Edinburgh I liked this neglected part of the whole scheme.

And another couple, the Train Station shot made it on the BBC Website that day.

How do you make these posts so that you can click for a bigger picture? Ta

I just get the same image path and put it in a URL around the img code.
So at the moment you've got
[ img ] http://path1 [ /img ]

You end up with
[ url= http://path1 ][ img ] http://path1 [ /img ][ /url ]

Otherwise get some bbcode from your hosting site.
