Messing about by the river. Beautiful Demoiselles are canny flies, it took me about an hour to get this male to trust me enough to get within an inch away. Also saw a female Scarce Chaser buzz right in front of my face, hover awhile in front of my nose only to fly away before I could even attempt to snap it. Better than big game hunting IMO.

Wedding #3 (#2 hasn't made it online yet...). At the start of the year, I would've totally fluffed this shot, but knowing my camera and my abilities really paid off with this one. Fave of the day.

Bit a depature from my usual 'aesthetic'; I decided I wanted to develop my style with the use of studio strobes. I'm not sure about them - I kind of like them as they're very striking, but I'm not sure if they don't look, well, kind of catalogue-esque.

They don't look quite right to me, Greg, possibly for two reasons: harsh strobe (unmodified? or with a snoot or reflector?) and underexposed background. If that's the aesthetic you were going for, then you've achieved it, but I'm not sure it works for these types of shots/your style, IMO.

edit: easy to criticise though, eh? 😆

harsh strobe (unmodified? or with a snoot or reflector?) and underexposed background.

Yeah the underexposed background was very deliberate; that is what I was trying to achieve but I'm not sure I like it either. It's an interesting step in a direction I would like to take and it is the first time I've used a proper stuido strobe, so it's a learning experience.

I hate with a passion the HDR look, at least when you have that as a result of post proessing and while this is not done that way, and the background is also under exposed, it still has that HDR look. The subjects pop though.

I used a beauty dish, but it's only 60cm so the lighting will be harsh (larger the source relative to the subject, the softer the effect and vice versa).

Put some diffusion over the beauty dish and bring it closer (so bigger)
Or get a bigger deeper box with a grid, I got a cheap walimex one which works well, eleinchrom want a fortune for theirs and I just don't do enough of that kind of work to warrant buying one.

Best thing is an assistant who will be a boom/stand holder 😆

I was SO hoping you would comment! Thanks MrSmith. The dish does actually have a diffuser, so I will use it tomorrow. As for an assistant, I think I need to be one before I have one.

On that point, if you ever need one on a weekend, I would jump at the shot to be yours for free; I would probably learn more from that than anything else I can think of.

Dammit, thought I'd typed out a reply. Was going to say something along the lines of MrSmith, like maybe a strip softbox with a grid?

Anyway, I was going to put up an example of a recent shot using just a speedlight, no modifier. Not really your style, Greg, but I think it works with this style. Otherwise, I tend to use a shoot through brolly with a speedlight. Can't be arsed carrying around anything larger, if I'm honest.

This is what I was thinking of for today's work:

I'm trying to work out if that's a single light, or two. Anyway, much more diffuse than what you were trying but I can see the similarities.

It is much more diffuse. I'll try the diffuser and then get a bigger softbox and grid if need be.

I don't make a habbit of asking the homeless to be subjects in my project; I'm not sure it's fair or right even if they are willing (and they almost always are, because the taking of a photograph is an affirmation of identity) but I've made a few exceptions mostly because they are people in my home town I've got to know.

In this instance, I didn't twig he was homeless until after I stoped him to talk. He told me his story, about how his wife had cheated on him with his best friend and he hadn't been able to cope with that and had been forced to leave.

trail of destruction: That is John Rylands Library Deansgate Manchester and I claim my £10.
One of the most beautiful libraries in tbe world.Visited it for the first time three weeks ago, having passed it hundreds of times. I especially like the way the modern extension works with the Victoria original. There is a great little historical Mission for Street Children on the side street next to it, which I only discovered as there was a 'real' fire alarm when I was there.

Points to Lotsroad. It is a lovely building, and if anyone hasn't been before it's well worth a visit when you're next in Manchester.

Welcome to the thread by the way. I'm slowly getting better at photography, despite working with cameras and camera equipment for 20 years ! This old dog is still trying to learn some new tricks.

Nothing to post at the moment as I've been a bit busy with other things, but finding some more time now, and I have a couple of trips planned, so I'll be back later on with my efforts.

Great light in both but the second image on the beach is particularly well structured.
