I had fun this morning. Brighton beach is a veritable aquarium of life early on a Sunday morning. Early bird swimmers braving the water and saturday night revellers spilling out from the clubs after an all night party mix on the pebble beach. Sunrise this morning was 6.30am.

Just a few holiday snaps the Aurora shots were taken from a moving ship hence the blurring of the foreground

A business trip to Barcelona meant I had a few hours to myself late afternoon. The light was very strong but because it's still only April and it was 4pm, low in the sky. The buildings were creating lovely strong contrast and pools of very bright light, perfect for making great shapes in street photography.

Hi Greg, yes, I am very pleased with the results from the SL; I think it's probably more to do with the lens than the camera (as I think it is in almost all cases) although of course the key thing here is that the SL and its sensor is entirely matched and compatible with Leica M-mount lenses. These images are shot with a 35mm Summicron, which has a rightly deserved reputation.

I do shoot in RAW but have done very little with these images compared to the basic RAW file. I don't tend to do much PP anyway and withe these images I did even less than usual. All I did was adjusted the tone curve to slightly increase the contrast and tweaked the white balance very slightly to cool the images a little (but it really was a very minor tweak.)

I think the impact that you can get from OOC with images is a whole lot more impressive when you have a lot of light. If you look at the best examples of iPhone images for instance, the best are all taken in really good light. Good light hides a multitude of camera sins I think!

At the other end of the spectrum to the SL, I've shot with slide reversal film for the first time (ever - I never even shot slide film before when I shot film previously).

It's been with me for a while - from 70s Polaroid as a kid to Fuji slide film in the 90s to digital now, I've always been drawn to the unnatural (one way or another) in colour and tone where photography's concerned.

Ooh I'm all with you there; I love that kind of stuff as well. Any reason not to continue loving that using film though? Apologies, I wasn't being rude, I just got a bad case of the HDR hives. It's a bit like eating sugar out of the packet.

Interestingly, I don't do (faux) HDR any more. It's all 'manual' processing. Admittedly the end result is visually not a million miles away from a dodgy HDR filter effect...

And (sadly) i don't own a 35mm camera any more. I imagine at some point i might get another one, but digital only right now...

Living in London sucks on many levels, but it has given me an opportunity to get into dance photography, which is something I was wanting to do for a long time.

Longer exposures and/or tracking and not jamming the subject into the frame will be more likely to give the sense of motion required to prevent it looking like you're photographing contortionists.

It's interseting light, looks almost like it was taken during a partial eclipse so it has that low light but not dusk feel to it that is so unique to an eclpise.

You've got an odd bokeh ball effect in the image, almost as if it's lens flare but it could be a specular highlight from a drop of moisture on the filter? Your sensor also has dust on it; there's a spot in the top left area that's quite visible.

If you loped the top fifth to quarter off the top you'd remove both artefacts and generally improve the balance perhaps?

I think it's lens flare (mid afternoon, pointing South West), and I see what you mean about the splodge. I couldn't see it on other pics, so hopefully it's on the filter not the sensor.

It will almost certainly be on the sensor rather than the front element of the lens. You can get away with a lot on the front element of a lens and it not cause a problem; but that mark definitely looks like dust on the sensor. You only ever see it when you stop the lens down, say beyond f/11, which is what you probably did for this landscape shot. The bigger the depth of field, the more likely you are to see the mark.

Have you got a 'blower' (for your camera I mean). They're cheap and usually get rid of the problem:
