hi.. can anyone help with a little bit of advice. I've got to take some photographs of some bags. studio photos a bit like this

http://inhabitat.com/sustainable-style-escama-studio-aluminum-handbags/

I have a basic nikon d80 and some lenses, and i'll happily invest some money to buy some lamps and soft box things.. but i'm not a pro at all. can anyone help.. i appreciate it takes a lot of skill and practice, but I want to practice!

Practice. And then practice some more ๐Ÿ™‚
Shoot tethered to a computer so you can instantly see the changes you make.
Use different light modifiers (screens/soft boxes/reflectors/hard light/soft light) and understand how they change the look of the subject.

Personally id light paint it, easiest cheapest way.

You want a nice white background, ideally a roll of paper, theyve either used perspex over the white BG or mirrored the image in PS.

Stick the camera on a tripod or something solid, position the bag how you want it. Take your light source, such as phone light, make sure camera has a 20sec ish shutter time on roughly iso 100, and kill the lights. Hit the shutter button and "paint" the bag with the flashlight. Front and rear. Tada, works from shoes to cars.

Doesn't Lightroom tether? I use capture1Pro but if you already have software that tethers it's pointless to spend on something else.

Yup - it does. Works very well but it's worth lashing out on an extra long USB cable!
