Just upgraded with Vodafone and would like to sell old phone. But technically am I still in a contract with VF as it's an upgrade? Hoping to get them to unlock old phone for free

Ask them. If you've upgraded I don't see why they wouldn't.

You'll be fine - I did exactly this with Vodafone after upgrading at the end of a contract.
Quick phone call and they'll text you a code.

About the only thing they are any good at is unlocking the phone, they use to do it for free and sure they still do.
