Righty ho, my New Galaxy W ('W' for w@nker presumably) turned up yesterday 12 hours after ordering Go! O2 ๐
My first smartphone. Yes it's got lots of 'stuff' but what killer apps do people actually use or are worth buying?
Viewranger- turns your phone into a proper OS mapped gps unit. Screen should still work through a transparent freezer bag, so don't worry about rain!
Other nice things are getting all your contacts and stuff synced together properly. Get your emails pushed through to the phone.
And of course you will be wanting Angry Birds ๐
Google Mytracks-GPS tracker
Google Goggles-scan stuff, take pictures and it does a google search.
Stupid Zombies-Blow zombies heads off and see the blood spurt..
angry birds hit 500million downloads yesterday. 500 million!
That's a lot of downloads for a game that's, fundamentally, crap.
Happy new phone.
That sportstracker app that was a bit of a Nokia-only gem has just been released for Android. I would rate it higher than endomondo and mapmyride.
facebook
seesmic for twitter
the daily Mash
Google goggles is great
Endomondo for tracking
'Movies' is great, tells you what's on near you, when, where with reviews, trailers etc
'WhatsApp' for sending SMS-style messages over wifi
'Withings' to use with my scales.
+1 for Viewranger - it's the dogs.
I thought it was fan bois.
EveryTrail for logging rides/pics
VLC remote if you have a media PC
QuickPic for looking at pics/vids
flashlight as a torch
Dolphin HD for a browser that will get full sites (you can set it to mimic a desktop computer rather than mobile versions of sites)
Opera for other browsing (no flash but very good otherwise)
taptu for getting fb/twitter/news all in one place
Launcher pro to replace the stock home pages and homeswitcher to manage it
"uninstaller" as you'll be trying lots of new apps
llama
winamp
tunein radio
astro - file browser and other tools
andftp
photoshop
vidtrim
Spirit HD - simple but great game
ebay
paypal
I had the TdF app, with real-time tracking of the peloton. Pointless, but fun.
Juicedefender - helps with battery a bit, unlike others this one seems to temporarily disable hardware you aren't using but have turned on
Sleep as Android - Fairly interesting and does actually seem to work for me!
NetCounter - Tracks data usage
GO SMS - really good SMS client
Droid Auction - ebay
AndChat - IRC
ColourMate - not released yet but you should buy it to help support my bike buying habit ๐
Oh, and put cyanogen mod on it, if it exists for your phone - it rocks!
Tasker.
If you have to ask why, you probably don't get it.
rainy days - rain radar
endomondo - ride tracker/logger
flashlight - torch thing
Advanced Task Killer - keeps memory free. Make sure you do the 'build recommended list' bit though.
3G Watchdog - Keep an eye on data usage, stops data if you get too high
CamScanner - Take Pictures/Scan Documents etc and turns them in to pdf's
Endomondo - As above
Ocado - Fantastic home shopping app
SMS Popup - When you get a message it comes up on the scree.
Save MMS - Allows you to save photos sent to you on a message.
Sky+ - Set Sky+ to record programmes from your mobile.
Pocket Auctions for Ebay - Better than the Ebay app
Endomonodo,
MapDroyd,
RetroCamera
google sky map
IMDB
flashlight
marine traffic
shazam

Handcent for txting
Advanced Task Killer isnt really needed if you're running Android 2.3<
Swype, if you haven't already got it.
So close to magic its makers would have been burned as witches not very long ago.
Minicon is cool for making teeny icons with no text under them.
Another vote for 3G Watchdog if you're on a capped data tariff. Wouldn't bother with task killer apps though.
BGS do a geology App, if that's your thing.
Trainline for well, trains
Good Beer Guide
+1 for viewranger
Google maps is a pretty good GPS
APF
Just commenting so that when my new galaxy s2 turns up I'll have about a million apps to try out.
+1 Swype
+1 Viewranger
Evernote - great for having notes/docs synched across multiple devices
Pixelpipe - sending pictures to multiple services at the same time

- Sundroid Free - sunset/rise times for current location
- TV24 - TV scheduler

- Copilot Live is offline car satnav (i.e. it works with no data connection)
- 7 digital, music shop
- ConvertPad - Convert between just about any type of units/currencies
- Iris - Something like Siri for iPhone

- Screen Filter - lowers the screen brightness more than possible with normal controls (for night time ebook reading etc)
- F1 2011 gives live F1 data during the race/quali
clubber - MemberAdvanced Task Killer - keeps memory free. Make sure you do the 'build recommended list' bit though.
Don't bother with this. Android's memory management/process model is completely different to a normal computers. This app is not required, and wastes battery by waking the CPU up to check what's running.
Angry Birds - play quite a lot
BBC iPlayer - hardly used
Compass - hardly use
ES File Explorer - use quite often
FxCamera - hardly use, but probably should
Goggles - use rarely
Google Sky Map - hardly use
Instant Heart Rate - use every now & again
Little Photo - hardly use, but probably should
London - tube map
Maps - google maps, use loads
My Tracks - use quite often
Note Everything - use quite often
Photo Tools - use every now & again
Photobucket - good if you have an account
RAC traffic - use quite regularly
Rainwatch - use regularly
Ringdroid - cuts up ringtones
Rocket Bunnies - used to play lots, don't really use now
Tank Hero - play quite a lot
Time Lapse lite - mean to use a lot, but never get round to it
Translate - not used much, but potentially very useful
TuneIn Radio - internet radio, use quite a lot
A couple of alarm apps: White Noise Lite, to wake you gently with sounds of the sea...or Good Morning, which speaks the time, gives you a weather update, reminds you of calendar events, and will speak any text you drunkenly enter the night before. Mrs rogg won't let me use that any more.
Advanced Task Killer isnt really needed [s]if you're running Android 2.3<[/s]
Generally, they cause more problems than they solve.
Hmmm no problems with it on mine with gingerbread.
Doesn't show up in the battery usage stats either (or is that a different process?)
Oh yeah, +1 for Dolphin HD. Great features and interface.
+1 Retrocamera
Vignette is great too, loads of playability.
SWYPE - crazy swipey keyboard thing, saves time when it gets it right, which is mostly.
Endomondo users, do you find that the data collected from your phone is accurate?. A couple of people have told me the data is often completely wrong from a phone, they've gone back to proper GPS.
Never noticed a problem myself.
Some of the older handsets had poxy GPS receivers though (did they ever fix the Galaxy S?) so it could be that rather than an inherent problem with the app.
Endomondo is ok on my HTC Desire, it cuts corners though and tends to read about 1-2 miles less than what you have actually ridden.
I tried Endomondo on my Desire. It was rubbish, even though I tried it round Rutland Water, which is mainly open.
My Tracks on the other hand is great. Never has gaps in the trace, even through the multitude of tree-covered singletrack at Thetford.
It's odd really, as I would have thought that the ability to keep GPS tracking would be down to the phone rather than the app.
Corrr, there's a bit to going on with. Thanks ๐ There's a lot packed in these days... First few times it rang, I couldn't work out how to answer it - pressing the green icon was not the answer ๐
@Dobbo. Bois might be the STW way but I can't help but think of French wood (not a porn reference)...
