Ugh. Someone trolled then got abusive on a thread on our local cycle club group (with some 500 members). All a bit silly and for mostly directed at me though I suspect he has some beef with others in the club. Anyway he's just posted that someone has reported him to his employers (probably linked from his profile) along with some threatening language. Bit concerned he might think I'm involved 😕

Let it lie? Respond to his post? PM him?

If you're going to troll at least have the good sense to do it annonymously!

And this is why I avoid Facebook and Twitter. I'd let it lie until he actually accuses you of something.

Strip to the waist* and fight like men.

*Waist up. Stripping from the waist down for a fight** would be a bit weird.

** Unless it was a cock fight.

Ah it's been moderated. Jist of it was that we were discussing some new cycling signage and this guy butts in calling us a bunch of saddos and asking if we had nothing better to do. I politely responded asking if he had nothing better to do than troll our thread. He responded with some fairly abusive language. Then later responded that someone had told his work (a local car dealership apparently) and that he was looking forward to meeting that person out on his bike.

Bit concerned he might think it was me. Or someone reported him as me (if he had beef with someone who wanted to get him in the shit.)

And this is why I avoid Facebook and Twitter. I'd let it lie until he actually accuses you of something

About the only bit of Facebook I use is our local cycling club and I rarely post anything!

Strip to the waist* and fight like men.

I think that's what he's after! I've not been in a fight since school (over a quarter of a century ago now!) and I'd like to keep it that way.

Just select the "I don't want to see posts from ...." option against his name.

He's been booted off the group now.

that someone had told his work

What's it got to do with them? I don't get this reporting people to their place of work, just to try and get them into some kind of trouble.

Agree it is pretty shitty. Though I did notice his place of work as it was the first thing to pop up when I hovered over his name. I guess trolling a road safety related thread on a public forum when you're very obviously working for a car dealership is somewhat asking for trouble.

Tell him maybe he'll learn his lesson then. While it was nothing to do with you, maybe others - including his employer - have taken a dim view of his antics and his chickens have cone home to roost.

Lesson learned sonny Jim.

What's it got to do with them?

If you work for a car dealer and presumably have a car from them, then threatening to kill a cyclist as revenge over a FB post would be what they call 'bringing your employer into disrepute'.

It does seem that way.

Even if I was minded to troll, with information on Facebook about friends, family, my kids, my place of work, all being so immediately available it seems a very foolish thing to do. Better to do it on here 😉

But he didn't threaten that until after someone dobbed him in to the boss (not that this makes it any better)

If it's any consolation I run quite a large windsurfing group and we had a number of trolls all out for kicking sand in our faces. Turned out it was a bunch of Kitesurfers annoyed at us using "their" beach.
Anywayz, after about the 10th troll I just booted them off the group and heard nothing from them after that.

We did carry one using one beach, why wouldn't we, and encountered some mouthy pot bellied builder giving us some stick. One of our lot got in a bit of bother with him and ended up having his van tyres slashed. We called Plod, who strangely came out pretty sharpish, and caught the bloke having a strop.

Hard to ignore trollerz on FB, best option is to tick the box and carry one enjoying life. Just watch out when you are riding in case you encounter "Mr Angry"

If it were me (speaking from some experience as a moderator on a popular mountain biking forum), I'd ignore him completely. Engaging him just gives him an outlet to [s]be more of a nob[/s] get more attention and it's just not worth it. You really don't want to get drawn in any further. So what if he thinks you did it? Let him think that if he wants.

What have the public actions of someone identified as an employee of a company got to do with that company? Do you really not get it when it's put like that?

Thanks Cougar, do wish I'd never responded to his stupid post, even if it was in jest.

What have the public actions of someone identified as an employee of a company got to do with that company?

Increasingly see this issue covered in employment contracts now too. Not a surprise really given that the link between individual and employer is now often very public with sites like Facebook.

Well now I'm told this chap was reported by someone from our club a while back having made a dangerous move on the road in his vehicle. Guess he joined the group with the intention of trolling. Don't know the details but clearly has beef with cyclists / club members 😕

Block him, get back to the real world for a bit

Funny really, I'd have no problems with it here, but it feels a lot more "real world" on Facebook.

Hope his employers have heard that he's been picking fights on FB after having his poor driving pointed out to him.

I'd want to know in their position.

Just been informed by the group owner that his employers are investigating as they have strict policies about their employee's use of social media.

FWIW most of my French friends do not use their real names on Facebook, abbreviated / nicknames for first name and false last names.

@mrblobby please don't hit anyone with valuable bike components 😉

Quite common now. I've a friend with two accounts. One with his real name for ex-work colleagues (and searchable by potential employers) and another with a semi-made-up name to use as a genuine personal account.

Quite a few of my friends in the UK do just that. Most who have jobs where friend requests from clients could be problematic to rejecting/ignoring, and want to keep a clear line between social and work sides.

Facebook Groups seem to bring the worst out in people, even more so than Twitter or Forums.

Seems that if someone is a dick in real life they will be a dickx1000 on FB groups.

Isn't that what linked in is for.

The ones who are actually bothered about some sort of security just don't have a social media 'presence' (i.e. those who work at Thames house or AWE), or just don't have one anyway.

Example is a friend who's an IFA in a professional sector. She started getting friend requests from clients which she felt awkward about rejecting or ignoring, but she didn't want to mix clients and social stuff. She ended up coming off Facebook and rejoined under a pseudonym.

That's pretty much my colleague's situation too. LinkedIn is for professionals, Facebook isn't. Which means a potential employer is going to get a far better idea of what you're like as a person from Facebook.

IFA is a very good example, people wanting to see where you live, want car you drive, where you go on holiday. I had an IFA who was a very good guy we'd go for a beer and he said many clients would be uncomfortable with him having nice house/car/kids in private school, as they'd resent paying for that

LinkedIn is for professionals, Facebook isn't.

MrsMC used to train social workers. Absolute nightmare with some of the stuff some of the students would put on social media, no concept of boundaries or how stuff could be used against them. Until it goes badly wrong.

A few people I know that are teachers do that too - they don't really want their pupils taking an interest in their lives outside of work

Lock down the security sharing settings and don't "friend" the pupils or anyone you don't want to see the content.

^ This x 1000.

I like FB for the forum element, I agree it's a good place for like minded folks to gather and organise rides and in my case Windsurfing.

But it's an easy tool to manage, just block anyone whose a nob, ignore provoking pokes at you and any of the forum members and/or report any nasty jibes.

Without FB I wouldn't have been able to organise the Round Hayling Windsurfing revival and subsequent iterations thereof. Organise weekly slalom races/sessions and training events. I think of it as a simple tool for the job of mild marketing and information sharing. Anything more than that and I think you need to step away from it. Just become a moderator of sorts, share what you need to, manage out those that piss you off and ignore the stupidity of some contributors.
