You know the sort of thing, where an actor or actress is simply so perfect for the role, that no one else can really play them afterwards?
For example;
Joan Hickson is Miss Marple. No one else can do it.
David Suchet has Poirot nailed.
Richard E. Grant is the only Scarlet Pimpernel there could ever be.
So, who else fits the bill?
Sandra Bullock as my wife. 😈
Jeremy Brett was THE Holmes, very close to Conan Doyle's original character.
tom baker- dr who.
basil rathbone- sherlock holmes.
rutger hauer as the hitcher/also as the replicant leader in blade runner(sorry forgot his name)

Agreed.
rutger hauer as ... the replicant leader in blade runner(sorry forgot his name)

I'm siding with Brett as Holmes as well, he got the "cat-like love of personal cleanliness" perfectly, as well as the deliciously drug addled, violin playing, obsessive lunacy of the man.
xherbivorex thanks 🙂
Ben Kingsley as Don Logan in Sexy Beast
Terry Thomas in pretty much every role he's every played!
David Suchet as Poirot
mr t as b a baracas
Robert Downey Jnr as Holmes
Only kidding... obviously Jeremy Brett
James Bond though?
Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe
Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie as Jeeves and Wooster
Ken Stott as Rebus. When I was reading the books it was always him I saw.
Sigorney Weaver as Ripley
Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro are great in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I watched Where the Buffalo Roam and Bill Murray was good as Hunter S Thompson but it just seemed slightly wrong having seen Fear and Loathing, just less convincing!
Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry. Wouldnt have been the same with Kenneth Williams
Arnie as the T-101
😆
Charles whitman aint got nothing on me allthepies!
Now, wheres my jelly donut gone!
Robert De Niro as the Taxi Driver.
Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden, he is 'everyman's alter ego.
Captain Flashheart as the boy in "bitty" 😯
Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn
Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn
I think he looked the part; I don't think he acted the part. In the books Aragorn knows he is destined to be king and is 'kingly' from the start. In the film, Viggo spends the first two films acting like a broody teenager, unsure of his role and destiny.
How about Johnny Weismuller (sp?) as Tarzan and Erol Flynn as Robin Hood? I also prefer Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes
Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes
Connery as Bond
Gerard Depardieu as Cerano de Bergerac
Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty
Peter Ustinov as Poirot
Dustin Hoffman as Ratzo Rizzo
Bogart as Rick
Peter Laurie as any little slimey baddy
George Sanders as Shere Khan
Sir Alec Guinness in all the parts he played in Kind Hearts and Coronets
Laurel and Hardy
Travolta and Jackson in Pulp Fiction
Sean Connery as James Bond
alistair sim as scrooge
I think the question is about characters that already existed ie in books/plays etc, and were subsequently made into films. So for instance Dirty Harry/Pulp Fiction don't count as the characters were either created for or evolved along with the actors who played them. So:
How about the following:
Nicholson as the Joker
Christopher Lee as Dracula
Some more that are on the tip of my tongue but I just can't think right now.
Very surprised at Jeremy Brett for Holmes. I thought he played him like a camp, supercilious theatre ham. Wood from the knees up IMHO.
There was one Holmes and his name was Basil Rathbone.
And Nigel Bruce plays the best Dr Watson.
And Nigel Bruce plays the best Dr Watson.
Absolutely.
Tom Hanks as Forest Gump
I can't decide between Michael Keaton or Christian Bale as Batman. I think we can all agree it's not Val or George.
Jeff Bridges as The Dude in Big Lebowski
Tom Cruise as any sawn off a**hole you care to name
I though Ben Kingsley was a brilliant Don Logan in Sexy Beast - about as far from Gandhi as its possible to get, was he born for either role or is he just a superb actor?
deluded - MemberI can't decide between Michael Keaton or Christian Bale as Batman. I think we can all agree it's not Val or George.
Bale has been the best so far, he at least got the meanness right. Keaton was just a comedy dwarf. Perfect for Beetlejuice.
Jim Carey - The Mask.
Hugh Jackman - Wolverine
Clint Eastwood - Judge Dredd (sadly only happened in my head).
I like comics 😉
Basil Rathbone as Holmes I can just about accept - he had the arrogance right, and he was better than Michael Cain at least, but Nigel Bruce as Watson? Yer 'avin a laugh!
Watson in the books is a quiet, highly intelligent, capable and brave ex Army Surgeon, as well as an excellent marksman. He's also of a similar age to Holmes.
About as far from the bumbling old duffer played by Nigel Bruce as it's possible to get. On screen, personally, I think Edward Hardwicke was just about perfect.
Andrew Sachs was good on the radio a few years ago too!
