Looking for a spring weekend getaway with the wife to do a bit of outdoors stuff. Live in South East so peak District looks easiest and nearest. Want to take the train. Has anyone got any suggestions? I thought Hathersage looked okay as a base, is it good for a weekend? Fancy staying somewhere nice rather than budget.
Cheers all.

Hathersage is a nice little village, some good cafes and pubs and a basic supermarket (in the garage). The main road gets unpleasantly busy sometimes, just the volume of traffic.

Other than that it's got about 3 or 4 outdoors shops and not much else. However it's very easy to get up to Stanage Edge, there's some nice walks around the village itself out the back away from the main road and you're also close to Hope/Edale and Sheffield.

Can walk out to Hope, Edale or Bamford and get the train back (or vice versa) for example so Mam Tor, Win Hill, Ladybower all in easy reach.

Bikes on the trains are fine at any time, it's Northern Rail so no need to book. One advantage of the ancient rolling stock is plenty of bike space!

Train from Sheffield to Hope, If I wanted spoiling for a weekend I would want to stay in Castleton, a bit further down the road but more for to do.

If you want to spoil her then this is just outside Hope and some great walks and rides from the door.

Lived in Hathersage for 8 years. I’d stop there over Castleton but maybe I’m biased. One of the best curry houses going in Maazi. And the Bank House now gives a good alternative option to the local pubs. Only draw back is it’s a bit of a pedal to the start of the best riding.

EDIT. Could stop in the George or at this Airbnb;

I think the thing with Hathersage, if you travel up by train, is that it's a bit of a hack to get out to stuff - even Stanage is 45 minutes or so walk. Hope and Castleton have more accessible walking on the doorstep. Bigger choice of pubs / caffs / restaurants in Castleton. Better cement works and bike shop in Hope.

Slightly leftfield would be Hayfield. It doesn't have a station, but it's only a couple of miles from New Mills, so you could get a train up to there via Manchester and a minicab out to Hayfield. Small and villagey, but with a few decent pubs and ace walking and biking on the doorstep.

Or Edale has a proper right deep in the hills feel, but only has a couple of caffs, a couple of pubs, two campsites, a small shop and a railway station. Great walking/biking straight out of the village though with Kinder on one side and the Great Ridge / Mam Tor on the other. For a weekend it's quite cool and a proper contrast to the whole London/SE frenzy. It'd be my choice if you just wanted to do some walking and grab a few beers and a pub meal in the evening. I wouldn't stop there for a week, but as a weekend get-away it'd be very cool - unless it rains of course, when it would just be very wet.

Don’t forget that Castleton doesn’t have a train station, nearest one is in Hope. If I had to stay near to the riding and start from the front door I’d pick Hope as a base. Nice pubs, great bike shop and a curry house.

Castleton is only a mile down the road. Regular bus between or £5 for a taxi.
Walk or ride between them on a regular basis.
Nothing wrong with Hope but apart from Loosehill House its more budget than nice for accommodation.
