I sold some items on Sunday night (haven't sold on eBay for many years but I've bought a fair bit), the buyers paid quickly but I noticed that the paypal email said that my email address isn't confirmed so I should log on and confirm it. I log in and try and confirm my email address (its one I've had for years but its not on my paypal account however eBay have it logged and they use it for all their communications etc).

Paypal say that the address is already in use and I should pick another one.

So I tried logging on with the new address. My password doesn't work for this address so I click the link to reset it. Sure enough the email from Paypal turns up but the name at the top isn't me, its someone called Michael Travers. A bit of searching suggests that someone else has set up a paypal account using my address (maybe years ago) and that paypal can do nothing about it. The payments have gone to this Travers person and the sellers should contact him and ask for a refund. How they are going to do this is unclear as any emails will come to me!

I'm in contact with paypal about this but they are not being especially helpful so far!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Contact the buyers, and ask them to reverse the payments?

That looks like what I might have to do - not a very satisfactory way of going about things though is it! I'm sure they will think I'm trying to scam them somehow!

They get there money back so they would be slightly daft to think you are scamming them. Just explain the situation, set up a new paypal account, and ask the payment to be sent to that?
I would do it if I was asked, as I'm getting my money back from the initial payment, and still paying through paypal and would keep all emails explaining the problem. Paypal (in my experience) has a good resolution centre normally too.

Both the buyers were very understanding and cancelled their payments. Just as they did this paypal emailed me to say that had cancelled the other guys account so my email address is free for me to use again!

Thanks guys, all sorted and everyone is happy 🙂
