Hmmm, this depends on application. A pasta sandwich would be rubbish, lasagne wouldn't work at all with chips.

A Lancashire Hot-Pot is basically potato lasagne.

And the Italians nicked the idea for pasta from an Irish bloke called Mark who worked in a Chinese Chippy in Liverpool, everyone knows that.

I'm with Binners on this one. Chips win every time. Pasta, not unlike rice, tastes like food you would give to your least favourite prisoner if you ran a POW camp from a Rambo movie. You have to add so many other things to pasta just to make it not taste like, well, pasta.

Stick with Chips, we can then distinguish you lot from us lot.

Interesting pizza/pasta fact- tomatoes were only introduced into Italy in the 16th century, before that it was all baked dormice and ting.

How small exactly is that Waitrose Mini Spag Bol then? Bite size? Like a fun sized mars bar?

It's still never going to be as good as a chip butty, is it?

A frozen pasta meal gets a "Yum"? And you're trying to display superior taste?

The chips are winning this one so far.

I don't have "superior" taste, simply pointing out quality vs quantity.

But cheesy chips are a marriage of the two finest foodstuffs known to man. Introduce bacon to that and it's getting potentially dangerous. You could be looking at a potential physical dependency

You can keep your mushrooms though 😉

But the cheesy chip crumpet is an interesting idea that needs investigation

It's bound to be miles better than pasta

Knowing how well they work sandwiched arround melty cheese and a burger i imagine this could be a winner.

But last night's lasagne is one of three best cold breakfast foods known to man. Why waste time, especially when hungover, frying and butty-ing? It's like worring what frame to mount the Mona Lisa in.

Place near me used to do an "Indian Chip Butty." Massive garlic naan, portion of chips on top, then covered in curry sauce. It was both as wrong and as right as you'd expect.

Potato beats pasta, as does rice, but pasta can be *made* more interesting.

From time to time we often have this discussion in my house...

Is it time to time or often?

And 'Potato' tells us nothing; you can't compare a boiled spud with a crispy potato rosti any more than you can compare a slice of plastic ham with bacon by labeling them both as pork.

I think we can discount rice, on the grounds that you still need bread to mop it all up.

Pasta isn't as versatile as spuds , so it's a potato/bread stand-off.
The existence of the chip butty leads me to conclude that the question itself is illogical and the answer is, obviously, both.

Going back to the whole concept of making things more interesting, applying anything to pasta or rice simply renders it slightly more palatable, and a little bit less dull and tasteless

Yet think about the effect that applying vinegar to hot chips has? In one simple action, you immediately produce the most deliciously mouth-watering aroma known to man, which instantaneously has anyone within sniffing distance salivating and overcome with an almost murderous desire for a chip butty

Nah, potato encompasses all potato in my mind; chips are good, but mash and roast spud are a bit meh...

Wraps are awesome.... bread, hmm..OK...

Actually, pasta and rice are, thinking about it, fairly even in my mind...

I'm not sure broadening the question to potatoes is allowed, the original question was pasta vs chips:

[quote=binners ]Yet think about the effect that applying vinegar to hot chips has?

How about applying vinegar to cold chips? Pasta wins because it's temperature independent unlike chips.

If you mean that it's dull and uninspiring, hot or cold, this is indeed true

Chips are bloody great hot, but cold chips, particularly if they've been marinading overnight in gravy, shoved in a butty* is a thing of beauty and wonder, and pretty much the perfect breakfast.

*Warburtons toastie, obvs. None of your wholemeal muck!

If its dull and uninspiring, it was made that way by the english/americans.

The problem is getting a good bowl of pasta in the UK is nearly impossible.

No bugger can cook it properly, sauce is dumped on top, pasta not drained properly, over cooked, not enough salt in the water, putting cream in carbonara FFS!? The list is endless.

In the UK chips win every time, at least we know what we're doing with them!

If it wasn't dull, why would the Italians invent all those sauces to go with it and ways to cook it? They'd just eat it on its own.

Hot chips, so fresh from their bath of boiling beef dripping they remove finger prints and the roof of your mouth? They're one of life's greatest (if slightly masochistic) pleasures.

Wraps are awesome.... bread, hmm..OK...

A wrap is a sandwich.
Fresh crusty bread is almost up there with chips, mash or roasties.

Rice has no hinterland, no emotional depth.
It is entirely utilitarian, one step up from eating grass or dogfood.
I only eat rice, like McDonald's, when due to necessity or incapacitating hangover I have no alternative.

Most white rice, like white bread, is bad for you.
Braaahn (Brun, for the BMW owners) bread is even more delicious than white bread.
Brown rice mings.

Pasta is what people eat when they don't have enough rain to grow potatoes.

So, are will all agreed, it's spuds AND bread?

You have left over chips? You've changed. And not for the better.

Don't try and pretend you've not done it. You're on the way back from the pub, you nip in the chippy and order steak pudding, chips peas and gravy, then back at home, half way through it, sat on the sofa, you drift off into a Stella-aided food coma. Maybe subliminally you willed yourself to do it, knowing that it would also deliver the perfect hungover breakfast
