It's nowhere near as good as chips, is it?
You're doing it wrong
Hmmm, this depends on application. A pasta sandwich would be rubbish, lasagne wouldn't work at all with chips.
you're doing it wrong
You need to fry it and cover with salt, vinegar and ketchup
A Lancashire Hot-Pot is basically potato lasagne.
And the Italians nicked the idea for pasta from an Irish bloke called Mark who worked in a Chinese Chippy in Liverpool, everyone knows that.

You jest.
I'm with Binners on this one. Chips win every time. Pasta, not unlike rice, tastes like food you would give to your least favourite prisoner if you ran a POW camp from a Rambo movie. You have to add so many other things to pasta just to make it not taste like, well, pasta.
lasagne wouldn't work at all with chips.
You jest.
Lasagne works perfectly well with chips.
Lasagne wouldn't work at all using chips.
(Actually, thinking about it...)
Lasagne works perfectly well with chips.Lasagne wouldn't work at all using chips.
Ah. I see.
I'm surprised you get Pasta up there.
Stick with Chips, we can then distinguish you lot from us lot.
There's a lad.
😆
I just expect better from the nation that gave us pizza
Now pizza and chips...... there's a combination
Interesting pizza/pasta fact- tomatoes were only introduced into Italy in the 16th century, before that it was all baked dormice and ting.
Rich and Beefy? Wow, count me in.
How small exactly is that Waitrose Mini Spag Bol then? Bite size? Like a fun sized mars bar?
It's still never going to be as good as a chip butty, is it?
I agree, but small and tasty beats large and greasy.
Love pasta, probably more than chips. In fact, I probably like rice more than chips.
Well you say that now bb, but after 6 pints of Stella....?
What about large and tasty?
Nothing beats that apart from free.
I just expect better from the nation that gave us pizza
Greeks do many other foods not just pasta and pizza.

I thought pizza was Turkish
A frozen pasta meal gets a "Yum"? And you're trying to display superior taste?
The chips are winning this one so far.
Didn't they also introduce garlic-flavoured tiling grout to the world? Not even pizza can earn them redemption for that
Mikey..... I think you need to go and have a think about what it is you just said
I'm comfortable with who I am 😀
I don't have "superior" taste, simply pointing out quality vs quantity.
Think about that.
binners, this pasta you're talking about, it came out of a yellow and red tin didn't it?
Tomorrow: binners goes all Ramsbottom masterchef and tries tinned ravioli. 😀
Ravioli? In a tin? What a time to be alive! 😀
Can I have mine with cheesy chips?
I had lasagne and chips the other night - it's my go-to dirty meal when Mrs Bravissimo is out for the evening. Really salty chips.
Can I have mine with cheesy chips?
Pah, Poutine is where it's at now man. Cheese, chips, bacon and mushrooms, but I do reside in the 'Mystic East'.
Hmmm this has me thinking, i might try chip carbonara. Chips, cheese, egg and bacon there is literally nothing that could go wrong with that
But cheesy chips are a marriage of the two finest foodstuffs known to man. Introduce bacon to that and it's getting potentially dangerous. You could be looking at a potential physical dependency
You can keep your mushrooms though 😉
Pasta is my addiction.
Hot. Cold. Sauced. Bare. I don't care. I always cook too much and always have to finish it off.
Pasta with marmite for a quick meal...

Indeed. I heard someone died from mushrooms, i bet there is a morel to that story.
Pasta and marmite? Sweet baby Jesus!!! That's just wrong on so many levels 😯
Pasta with marmite for a quick meal...
What is wrong with you?
Don't they have crumpets and melty cheese where you're from?
Would a [number of] chip butty made with crumpets instead of white bread work, or is it too much goodness and doomed to fail?
But the cheesy chip crumpet is an interesting idea that needs investigation
Knowing how well they work sandwiched arround melty cheese and a burger i imagine this could be a winner.
A pasta sandwich would be rubbish
I would suggest sir tries the 'last nights lasagne, stir fried, in a butty' breakfast the next time you've had too much to drink
Stop it. I had salad for dinner. I was already hungry before talk of cheesy chips.......and bacon........and crumpets.
Still, even pasta is betterer than salad.
cheesy chip crumpet
When I start my band, that will be the name of our first live compilation album.

Salad works really well as a side dish for steak, pasta not so much.
STEAK! Mmmmm
'last nights lasagne, stir fried, in a butty' breakfast the next time you've had too much to drink
But last night's lasagne is one of three best cold breakfast foods known to man. Why waste time, especially when hungover, frying and butty-ing? It's like worring what frame to mount the Mona Lisa in.
That boats already sailed Flashy
Cheesy Chip Crumpet did a session for Mark Riley on 6 Music last Wednesday

Salad is what food eats.

Dagnammit!
You can join me in setting up my thrash metal band Hunting With Hammers
This thread is wrong.
Any thread disparaging pasta has no place on a bike forum.
I like disparagus but it doesn't agree with me.
Now pizza and chips...... there's a combination
Place near me used to do an "Indian Chip Butty." Massive garlic naan, portion of chips on top, then covered in curry sauce. It was both as wrong and as right as you'd expect.
Pasta with marmite for a quick meal...
Sounds like insufficient Marmite to me.
Ravioli? In a tin? What a time to be alive
Not to mention the spaghetti hoops.
From time to time we often have this discussion in my house...
My feelings are:
Pasta>rice>wraps>bread>potato...
There..I said it!
DrP
Potato beats pasta, as does rice, but pasta can be *made* more interesting.
Things like wraps and bread are trying to hard.
....but pasta can be *made* more interesting.

From time to time we often have this discussion in my house...
Is it time to time or often?
And 'Potato' tells us nothing; you can't compare a boiled spud with a crispy potato rosti any more than you can compare a slice of plastic ham with bacon by labeling them both as pork.
I think we can discount rice, on the grounds that you still need bread to mop it all up.
Pasta isn't as versatile as spuds , so it's a potato/bread stand-off.
The existence of the chip butty leads me to conclude that the question itself is illogical and the answer is, obviously, both.
Going back to the whole concept of making things more interesting, applying anything to pasta or rice simply renders it slightly more palatable, and a little bit less dull and tasteless
Yet think about the effect that applying vinegar to hot chips has? In one simple action, you immediately produce the most deliciously mouth-watering aroma known to man, which instantaneously has anyone within sniffing distance salivating and overcome with an almost murderous desire for a chip butty
"60% of the time, it works every time.." 😉
Nah, potato encompasses all potato in my mind; chips are good, but mash and roast spud are a bit meh...
Wraps are awesome.... bread, hmm..OK...
Actually, pasta and rice are, thinking about it, fairly even in my mind...
DrP
Tortalinis/raviolis are my go to pasta, fry some mushrooms and tomatoes and mix with some butter for a quick tasty meal
I'm not sure broadening the question to potatoes is allowed, the original question was pasta vs chips:
Yet think about the effect that applying vinegar to hot chips has?
How about applying vinegar to cold chips? Pasta wins because it's temperature independent unlike chips.
Tu sei tutti i filistei! I miei ravioli fatti in casa avrebbero vinto ogni volta che si abbinassero contro una patata. Le persone mi fanno male.
🙂
Edit: my italian isnt what it used to be.... this may not translate very well 😳
The big giveaway is when did anyone last distract you in order to pinch a farfalle or penne from your unprotected plate?
Pasta wins because it's temperature independent unlike chips.
If you mean that it's dull and uninspiring, hot or cold, this is indeed true
Chips are bloody great hot, but cold chips, particularly if they've been marinading overnight in gravy, shoved in a butty* is a thing of beauty and wonder, and pretty much the perfect breakfast.
*Warburtons toastie, obvs. None of your wholemeal muck!
Pasta meh.
Double dipped deep fried chips on a two crusty slices of white bread with vinegar and sea salt.
Hth.

You have left over chips? You've changed. And not for the better.
If you mean that it's dull and uninspiring, hot or cold, this is indeed true
If its dull and uninspiring, it was made that way by the english/americans.
I've told this to Zia (auntie) Juliana and she's on her way over to give you a stern talking.
The problem is getting a good bowl of pasta in the UK is nearly impossible.
No bugger can cook it properly, sauce is dumped on top, pasta not drained properly, over cooked, not enough salt in the water, putting cream in carbonara FFS!? The list is endless.
In the UK chips win every time, at least we know what we're doing with them!

If it wasn't dull, why would the Italians invent all those sauces to go with it and ways to cook it? They'd just eat it on its own.

Too true

Just like you'd eat a chip without salt, pepper, vinegar, tommy sauce, hp, mayo, mustard? (delete as appropriate)

Hot chips, so fresh from their bath of boiling beef dripping they remove finger prints and the roof of your mouth? They're one of life's greatest (if slightly masochistic) pleasures.
Wraps are awesome.... bread, hmm..OK...
A wrap is a sandwich.
Fresh crusty bread is almost up there with chips, mash or roasties.
Rice has no hinterland, no emotional depth.
It is entirely utilitarian, one step up from eating grass or dogfood.
I only eat rice, like McDonald's, when due to necessity or incapacitating hangover I have no alternative.
Most white rice, like white bread, is bad for you.
Braaahn (Brun, for the BMW owners) bread is even more delicious than white bread.
Brown rice mings.
Pasta is what people eat when they don't have enough rain to grow potatoes.
So, are will all agreed, it's spuds AND bread?
You have left over chips? You've changed. And not for the better.
Don't try and pretend you've not done it. You're on the way back from the pub, you nip in the chippy and order steak pudding, chips peas and gravy, then back at home, half way through it, sat on the sofa, you drift off into a Stella-aided food coma. Maybe subliminally you willed yourself to do it, knowing that it would also deliver the perfect hungover breakfast
