Any software out there that will allow me to partition my hard drive without formatting it first? I want to try windows 7 but I'm not certain that I'll be able to find drivers for everything so want to keep vista in one piece!

Loads of free stuff when you google it.

I have used this in the past with no issues

Oh and windows 7 is ace. It will find all the drivers itself without you messing around, unless you have something really obscure.

Make sure you have your original Vista disk, as Vista usually won't boot after a re-partition without being repaired using the vista disk.

yep its a linux application, if you boot into Knoppix and then you should be able to repartition your disk (if you have free space) pretty easily.

If you need to resize then partition magic is a much safer bet

Vista has a built in disk partitioner that will allow you to shrink the original partition

You can also install Windows 7 to a virtual disk, without the need to partition anything. It just lives as a large file on your disk instead; don't like it, just delete it.

Ah, it is probably only if you install xp that problems occur, windows 7 should be okay.

look for "EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition"...it's free (i.e. you are not stealing) and it works

I ended up using the shrink function built into Vista after a mate pointed it out to me, didn't fancy a VM as I wanted to make sure all the drivers for my laptop were available on 7. I've now decided I'm just gonna wipe the entire drive and install 7 as I can't be arsed to install it twice!
