Since my parents reached 60 ish they seem unable to hold their phone to the ear anymore. "Ooo I'll just put you on speakerphone" like theyre on the apprentice or something, then they preceded to argue about certain events with each other whilst we chat away. One butting in over the other, I find it highly amusing and know the wife's parents do the same. Just us?

No, my mother argues with herself whilst on speakerphone.

Yeah my parents do that.  Half the time when I call them the call is mostly them muffled bickering.

Nope, my parents don't do that, but I suspect only because they wouldn't know where the 'speaker button' is on the phone.

Instead, whoever I am not directly talking to tries to second guess the conversation you are having & constantly shouts out irrelevant comments which relate to what they think you are actually talking about.
This then distracts the parent you are actually trying to have a conversation with, so the shortest comment or remark takes around 20 minutes to get across due to all the misfired background comments.....

Mine do it too (67 & 72), it makes no difference at this end but they're happier.

They've changed the house phone handset several times recently trying to get the best call quality. I read somewhere a few years ago that DECT phones aren't that great for call quality and a corded phone will perform much better (but we all want cordless phones).

My dad turns the speakerphone on then holds the phone to his ear. And shouts. He's not particularly deaf, he just can't seem to fathom all the permutations. Phone at the ear or away from you? Speakerphone button pressed or not? Shout or talk normally? Way to much to deal with!

Speakerphone is OK, their mastery of Skype, however, is funny and frustrating. Could also post this to the family IT support thread.

My pretty deaf 88 yr old Dad exclusively uses the speakerphone - he thinks it's the 'loud' button.

No issues with speakerphone but plenty with starting the conversation before I have even answered the call.

We talk to GtiuJunior on Watsapp video calls. It's free, the sound quality is excellent and all you need to do is hold the phone steady.

Yeah, speakerphone and then they wander across the room or out of the room with phone still sat on desk/table and I wonder why I can't hear them any more.

Even sat next to it, quality is very variable. It's why listening to radio call-ins constantly the presenter asks the caller to take it off speakerphone so we can hear them properly!

Though I'm one of the few who would prefer people call me from a landline, to my landline. Quality is so much better. While some mobile operators have HD call networks, 99% of people have phones or are on networks, contracts or local cell that doesn't support it.

Parents are one of the few who will still use a landline, but then they use speakerphone to ruin it.

I prefer to use my mobile, and I’ll often switch it to speaker with the phone on my knee while I’m talking, mainly because I can more easily make any necessary notes or whatever. Or else I’ll use my BT earpiece if it’s me instigating the call. I find landline quality is often pretty shonky. Though that may be the shitty Binatone phones I have - I don’t use the landline often enough to care about buying anything better, I really only have the line for broadband.
