Anyone ever done it? Fancy trying to spray them to get a good finish, anyone any tips before I arse it up!! Thanks
Bare mdf? Yup spray is the best, though you can get a good finish with a brush with the right paint thickness.
Won't be very durable though IME.
There have been several threads on bunk beds - one of which at least mentioned a hard-wearing paint finish which had proven very durable. Worth a search!

Clean them first with sugar soap - grease will make the paint not stick properly
There is a product call ESP Easy Surface prep - not cheap but really effective way of preparing the surface for paint.
Use eggshell type paint - gloss will show any imperfection
Brushing is fine, need to take your time!

Try Annie Sloan chalk paint, it's brush on not spray but Mrs Clatter has done our kitchen and a built in wardrobe with really good results.

As long as you seal well, it'll take whatever finish you choose pretty well.
The edges suck up moisture like a sponge so seal well, sand, seal, sand and finish.
A good way to seal is paint with a 50/50 mix of PVA glue and water. honest!
As above make sure everything is well covered and you will need to repeat the painting. We had an MDF kitchen and after a few years it was already falling apart with water ingress, never again.
Paint with at least two coats of vinyl, rubbed down gently between coats with medium wet 'n dry paper used wet.
