Mr Woppit - whats the crack with this then, keep seeing the adverts but think it is a bit too good to be true - need something pdq and keep thinking about this "
Hi. I'm about halfway through the training/study process (3 months). If you don't have any previous experience with building and house design/structure/services etc., you may find it (like I did) a lot of hard work wrapping your head around the subject. I could not believe that central heating systems could be so complicated, for instance! I found the subject engrossing, however.
It's NOT CHEAP, although I've signed an agreement to accept work from the pack providers attached to the parent company, so they'll give me back £1k of my outlay.
I'm looking forward to being my own boss having spent 20 years in an office and then getting redundantised as a reward for my long service...
Make sure you investigate more than one company to give your money to as they are not all reputable, despite being attached to the government overseeing body (Awarding Body of the Built Environment). My first approach was to a company that was an obvious bunch of chancers whose interview, "ability test" and "psychological profiling" during the initial contact were completely pathetic and innappropriate (I've been in Occ. Psych. and recruitment previously) with completely unimpressive training facilities.
There are, of course, no guarantees about future work (self employment) but in the current situation it seems to me that it's a better bet than trying to get a company to give you a salary for working for them - a busted flush these days. Especially when there's 300 people all apllying for the same job!
You will need to research your local area and check out the competition. If, for instance, you live in a rural or semi-rural area there may not be any operators at all, but what are the likely future house sales/renting levels likely to be to provide you with work? If you are urban, there may already be lots of operators in place, reducing your available workbase by an unnacceptable ammount.
The training scheme will not tell you any of this - they will simply accept your money and train you...
Where are you based? Perhaps I could have a look at the situation in your area for you, if I can.
😉
