Sorry if this has been done, but I couldn't see an obvious post.

Elon Musks Boring Company has just put this up for sale -
https://www.boringcompany.com/flamethrower

I really want one! No idea why, but I do.

But, can you legally have one here in the UK?

Pfft, you get a better flame from a can of GT85 - that’s not a flamethrower, that’s a blowtorch mounted on a shotgun stock.

a tweet from someone who seems to know this stuff suggested it was potentially a 5yr sentence for ordering it from the UK. *sulks*

Did you read the small print on the web page?

-Fire extinguisher sold separately (for exorbitant amounts of money)

-Taxes and shipping will be added at checkout

-Additional customs fees may apply for international orders because of laws

-International customers can receive a full refund if not happy with said fees

-Before shipping, aspiring flamethrower aficionados will be sent a terms and conditions rhyme for review and acceptance

-Starts shipping in spring

-May not be used on Boring Company decorative lacquered hay bales or Boring Company dockside munitions warehouses

Gobuchul,

Its not a conventional description, I'll give you that.

But I still don't know what makes you think its a joke, not a single part of that implies its a joke.
If you read the rest of the website, that description follows the overall trend.

It would likely class as a firearm in the same way police CS spray and pava are.

It's not on the same scale, but it you target weeds, then these appear legal (you could probably still do some damage mis-using one).

Could be a joke, but other flamethrower retailers are available if it is.

I'd imagine it's fine to own in the UK. You can buy them for weeding...

You can also make them from electric water pistols. Or rather, you can just fill an electric water pistol with petrol and shoot through a flame. Don't do it indoors though (it involved a fire extinguisher, a bath, and full frontal nudity to overcome that mishap).

I went for the weeding idea, and sold it to myself.

So i've ordered one... Lets see what, if anything turns up!

Awesome, and scary, bit of kit.

To be fair to myself I've only just watched the top videos. If it's just a flame like that then I guess it's likely to be ok like a flame weeder.

I had assumed it'd throw out a line of fuel at distance.

Home defence. Better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness

We have a flamethrower ish type device for clearing weeds between the bricks on the drive.

It doesn't really 'throw' the flame, but it looks pretty sinister. Got it from machine mart I think. I can only assume it's legal!

so these appear to be an actual thing. a seemingly progressive company selling a basic BBQ lighter to muricans. presumably this is just viral marketing?

Flamethrowers generally shoot some sort of flammable liquid out which is set on fire as it leave the machine - like a hose pipe of petrol which is set on fire after it leaves the pipe. So anything the liquid lands on will basically experience what it’s like to be doused in petrol and set alight.

The weedkillers are really just a powerful gas flame like a cooker jet or blowtorch.

I guess you could justify this if you were into pottery and used it to heat a kiln?
