sure been asked before - when i manually backup windows 7 document files get an error message file name too long - i know this is due to lengthy file names in embedded folders - any utility that can find them for me?
want to back up the files to transfer to a new machine and obviously if don't copy will lose them
cheers
From memory it's when the destination folder makes the name longer, try copying them to the something like c:\backup
good point with a date and description destination is probably 30 characters will give it a go
Have you tried applying the hot fix for long file names in Windows 7?

could give that a go would seem obvious but on ms forum all negative comments (rather than some neg' some positive some too geeky and some odd)

cheers Mike that was simple and worked
Yeah, it's the path length/destination folder. 'cut long names' is a wee app thingy that sorts them out if they are buried all over the place.
cheers all, am sorted......the hot fix is no longer available - rolled into the service pack which I have - looks like works some windows versions but not great for old windows 7 - have looked at and book marked "cut long names" as looks good  - destination folder shortening sorted for transfer and moving to windows 10 I believe should sort long term ? sad but got a lot of legacy folders like mydocs/ old machines/ toshiba laptop nov 2003 / documents/ folder/ sub folder / sub sub folder/ and files some with really long file names just grabbed by a pdf print extension from the source
