I know I'm not one of life's super athletes, and the past 6 weeks in a hotel 2/3 nights a week isn't helping either. And being dropped very early on the club social run at the weekend was the final straw. So last night as the weather was good, thinking that I must start doing something while I'm away from home I broke out the old running shoes and took to the paths around the hotel golf course
Ouch! I didn't think I'd resort to walk some/run some like a bloke who's taking it up for the first time. In defence it was quite hilly (Shipton area), but I did run 1:40 for half marathons 15 years ago and I didn't think 30 mins and 2-3 miles could possibly hurt so much. Stitch, sore hips and both calves feel like they've been beaten with sticks this am.
Any ideas for a basic 'start running again' program?
Might be worth thinking about investing in some new running shoes? Don't know how old or worn out your current ones are, but they might not be helping.
Other than that, sounds like a good start. Stick to 2-3 miles a couple of times a week for a couple of weeks, start increasing the distance of one of the runs slightly. You'll be amazed how quickly you regain the basic fitness and the aches and pains disappear.
start gently, only run / jog for about 15-20 mins at first. Give yourself a day to recover after each run, repeat three or four times and then start to gently increase the distance & speed which you run at. Just build up slowly don't try and do too much too soon. warm down & stretch afterwards, pay attention to hamstrings, calves & achillies. It will hurt at first but there's not much you can do about that until your body gets used to it.

nickc.... ๐ฏ usually your posts are the few and far between sensible and informative on this site... ??
I tend to run more in the winter when I get less biking in, the first run always hurts but it does ease of. Stick with it.
Keva, too old for running any more, aching joints and knees can't take it...Only running I do these days is to the bar... ๐
Used to though, take it steady jonv, small distances. 2-3 miles is a lot when you haven't run in ages
