Just got my daughters new iPod touch. Plug it into the computer and it says this only works with iTunes 7. So I've downloaded iTunes 7 which says this only works with OS X 10.6.8. My computer appears to have 10.5.8.

1) What do I need to do now?

2) Is that going to be horrendously expensive?

How old / what model is your machine?

As above, how old is the machine - it depends on whether your machine is being capable of upgrading the OS. If it is, then it's the cost of an OS. If not, it's the cost of a new machine.

Apple seems to be doing this more and more where applications are linked into the operating system version. You will need to upgrade but it will only cost about £20

Any idea on model?

About this Mac tells me

Mac OS X
Version 10.5.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

If that's what you mean?

Have you run software update recently? My iPhone 4 running iOS 6.0.1 works with a G5 tower (2002 vintage) running leopard though not all functions work (e.g. sync over the air).
It looks like you will need a copy of snow leopard before you can update to Lion/Mountain Lion.

Perfect. You should just be able to upgrade the OS. You have Leopard, you need Snow Leopard. This is the most recent OSX which can run on your machine.

Don't you love Apple

Yes, did software update, nothing new.

It looks like you will need a copy of snow leopard before you can update to Lion/Mountain Lion.

That's the impression I get from woody's link.

(If I do that I wonder if it will cure the regular freezing of safari?)

Unfortunately I think it's a call to Apple to get it cheap

Am I going to be better off downloading iTunes onto my wife's laptop?

If it's windows (the irony) or a more recent version of a mac, then yes!
