We will be in touch
I may be able to buy a lightly used original Ipad from a neighbour. But... I understand that Ipads will only run Apple apps due to the Apple operating system. Is that correct and if so is there a workaround that would enable me to download apps from Google Play?
What have been your experiences of the original Ipad?
Many thanks in advance.
No hope at all of running google, find a android tablet
Original iPad is just fine for running Apps, watching films etc.
My kid is happy with his and (apart from disk space) has never desired an upgrade!
I have a 2 and the only noticeable difference is the novelty camera.
iPads run apps that are approved by Apple, they can still be published by other such as Google and Microsoft.
This was written using the chrome browser app 🙂
Is there an Ipad Jailbreak available?
I'd look for a cheap 2 if I was you. The processor is far better.
Is there an Ipad Jailbreak available?
Yes.
Do tell more...

Blackrain?
Is there an Ipad Jailbreak available?
Yes, but it won't let you install apps from Google Play because they are written for an entirely different operating system. Think trying to play Amiga/Playstation games on an Atari/XBox (delete depending on your age).
Thank you. These sort of things are worth knowing.
The original iPad is still a good bit of kit, you only notice the speed when you compare it to a newer version. Still using mine quite happily and no intention of changing any-time soon.
One point: the original iPad doesn't have a front camera, so no good for video calling.
It doesn't have a camera at all.
The lack of a camera isn't an issue.
That's why I called it the novelty camera 🙂
Be warned though, the original iPad won;t run iOS6 when it's released. Whether that means that increasinly apps won't be compatible, I don't know but is effectly rendering a 2 year old bit of hardware obsolete.
Thanks for letting me know. I hope that Google/Android don't have similar planned obsolesence in mind...
We use FaceTime everyday on the iPad to talk to family all around the world.
Not having a camera was a massive reason I got a new (3rd) iPad.

Fraid so.
Latest Android OS versions (i.e. Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich) are not compatible with older hardware.
So apps written to use features of those versions won't work on older hardware.
Not so much planned obsolescence as just progress. Things change. Hardware gets better. New features are added. Apps use new hardware and features.
Well if I bought a tablet I was going to make it an ICS and update for as long as possible.

I was about to say does anyone ever actually video call, but then...

For me the camera on the back is the most pointless though - I can't really think of an worse form factor for a 'camera'.

We do regularly too. Great for grandparents to regularly see our little one.

It's handy during video calls: you can switch which camera is active and 2 year olds rarely stay still for long. 😀

Although the iPhone 3GS, which is older than the original iPad and incidentally Apple is still selling is compatible with iOS6, but the iPad, which is newer but Apple don't sell any more, will not.
Maybe not planned obsolecence, but certainly convenient.

Yes... and what Android devices can run Ice Cream Sandwich: "Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." says Google so anything prior to that (May 2010) is incompatible?
Just saying.

I was surprised just how many people were using iPads as cameras during the Olympics. I suppose you can at least see a large image immediately.

Afraid I don't have a clue when it comes to Android. Besides, it's a competely different model when you have different companies responsible for the hardware and OS.
Given that Apple are supporting the 3GS iPhone on iSO6, albeit it a slightly reduced manner, I'm sure they could have done so for the iPad 1.

And the screen is. I have a retina one (3rd gen) but last night I picked up an original. The pixelation hurt my eyes. Horrible!

iPad 1 and 2 have the same screen. Only the new (3) iPad has retina.

There are a LOT more 3GS' out there than iPad 1s though, especially since as you point out, they have been selling it as the "budget Phone" recently (which I expect will stop when the 5 is established)
I was given an iPad 1. It's fantastic.
You can still do an incredible number of things on it. (90% of the things you can on an iPad3, I'd imagine)
If you get it now and get the apps you want, then don't upgrade anything, it will still be doing everything you want for years.
The audio quality is incredible compared to some of the cheaper android devices I've tried. The whole thing is very well designed. Unlike the iPhone, they got this one right the first time.
Personally, I wouldn't hesitate if the price is right.
Unlike the iPhone, they got this one right the first time.
But the iPhone was the first of its kind. The original iPad was no more than a big iPhone. But without a phone.
The point is, they had already got it right by the time the iPad came out.

True, but the iPad was still a revolutionary device.
