I have a Microsoft optical notebook mouse, red laser type. It doens't seem to be working very well on a black wood-effect desktop. Is that a characteristic of the surface or is it borked?

Probably the surface, if there isn't a lot of contrast in the surface they don't always work well.

The older optical or laser versions are a bit sketchy on uniform or shiny surfaces.

The newer Bluetrack ones fare much better on almost all surfaces (except very clear glass or mirrors).

Why don't you just try it on a different surface?
