Same as clubber here, I was a bit shocked thy'd had no donations in 3 months, and while I think I donated in the past, I felt I should do so again. Of course the tag thing helped!

I do think I've earned my tag though (as well as paying for it 😛 ).

No idea why you're such a hater RD.

I'm not, do you not want me to tell everyone you're "donating" cash to me to reply to your posts so you can maintain your status?

Btw, that's another £5 to my account please

I dunno. There are some fairly overt examples of people getting sand in their special parts over this, yet for some reason Mark seems to think I am cross. I'll patiently await his response, so we can get to the bottom of him grabbing the wrong end of this particular stick so firmly.*

Uh oh Jamie, Mark owns the keys to the Ban Hammer cupboard and after all the donations can afford to lose a few people 🙂

Could be a nice earner for STW - charge £x / month for a customised tag....

Instead of donating £5 to a business for a name change, just give it to charity instead. Maybe Mark could donate whatever they've earned from this to charity - I'm sure that would make everyone happy and make those that have paid their £5 look a little less stupid.

I like the banter this has created..

Donations to the Mag are a Good Thing. If it creates a little happiness and joviality to the reader and poster well, well we should take it as is.

Secretly we all know who the attention whores are, some haven't actually donated to get a tag. 😉

You mean money for people who have used the classifieds, yes I know that.

Nice little sideline.

No I didn't so I still don't know what you mean by the purpose was to get some money for the classifieds. I thought if you used the classifieds you were supposed to donate to the site and thats what this £5 was all about.

But as above I wouldn't donate money to a business.

The purpose of the 'pick your tag' thing was to generate some revenue from the 'buy us a beer'/donate link on the classifieds forum.

To prompt people to send some money if they'd been using the classifieds.

To earn cash from the website.

To get some revenue for the business.

To pay some staff wages/server costs/fund Mark's house restoration/etc

It's not that complicated to understand, surely?

[edit] maybe think of it as an 'honesty box' for classified users rather than a donation?

You know, I'm fairly sure that Al isn't taking this seriously but it's clear that many others are. That's the odd bit.

Yes deadly serious - who would not want to be known by that tag if not to be taken seriously 🙄

Its bith sad and amusing and made STW some money

Some dont like some dont mind - its true there is nothing we wont argue over or get personal

Jamie - Mark may be referring to your post on the thread wher eyou appeared upset at missing the chance- personally I take everything you say as a joke [ or an attempt at one - ooh get her 😉 ]- as I do with al generally.

The only organisations that should ask for donations are charities.

Well for all of you without a P it is a charity - well its a free service- as others are paying for STW and not you

I think we should be able to change your tags to whiney freeloading leeches or perhaps benefit scrounger for the right wing ones 😉

Unless you decide not to bother with the 'p' option if you do subscribe or you buy the mag in the shops. So I think that statemnet is complete nonsense.

The P is not optional.
Is it really your view that all those who dont subscribe buy the mag?

I can understand why you would say you do but its cheaper to subscribe than buy it in the shops so I find it hard to beleive anyone does this tbh. I am sure this is an atypical exemplar out there so lets all just agree its you and true for everyone else

Happy now ?

I am sure this is an atypical exemplar

Not me, I do occasionally buy the mag. But otherwise I'm just a selfish abuser of the forum.

It might be a sign of age and grumpiness. But there's so little in any sports mags these days that isn't just stuff re-worked from ye olde days it's hard to get interested every month.

STW does at least have some decent photos in it. Which is usually the selling point tbh.

So you're saying no one buys the mag in the shops?

Straw man - no of course some folk do - do you think the number of forum users = the number of mag sales - by what order of magnitude is the differenc x 10. x100, x1000?

I do and is its more expensive I contribute more to stw than you do.

Does not mean they make more profit from you than me -I suspect they would rathe rhave subscriptions as it is a guaranteed sale
So looks like you're the leech.

Dreadfull troll- you dop this to give them mor emoney - is this really your argument

Whilst I may have used some inflamattory [ and jokey] langiuage I think my point is largely true and you ar ejust whinging about what is blindingly obvious

the majority of folk who post here dont contribute to the mag or to STW

The P is not optional.

It was when I was a subscriber.

I assume someone at STW can settle that debate

As I am not a Al epic battle level I cant be arsed continuing this

Ohh get you, you're abviulsy far more into this than I am.

Nice reply to your point being wrong - perhaps you should have my tag?

I am deffo out if this is what you do when you are wrong

It's all moot anyway. With the, by my count so far, fifteen whole pounds that this little fund-raiser has generated, Singletrack Towers staff will soon be closing the forum and swanning off to the Bahamas for a month.

hence why i clarified what I meant - why not argue against the point that you are getting it for free whilst others pay ?
Good luck

THM was just trying to show why al was Epic and I lacked the fight 😉

Edinburgh Defense
The Edinburgh Defence is an Internet adage employed in online forums and message boards the basic premise of which is that when losing discussion or argument rather than conceding defeat the poster suddenly switches tactics and adopts an "I was only joking" approach.

The main avenue for income from this site is adverts. By visiting it, and creating content for others to view, we all generate money for Gofar Enterprises ltd.

its when it gets to this stage that these initially amusing threads become turgid.

"I've got to get the last word in!"

"No, I'VE got to get the last word in"

ad infinitum

When adblockers first got debated a good few years ago, Mark was, IIRC, quite unequivocal about how the forum subsidised the magazine, and not the other way.

Do you have figures to prove that? I subscribe because I quite like the mag and find the forum entertaining. Without the forum I'd just buy the mag from a shop as and when it took my fancy, probably not often in reality.

Clearly the forum is a very important, special part of your life and I kind of understand thats why you're so protective of it. I'll leave it alone now. Is there an STW equivilant of a knighthood?

Listen very carefully, I will say this only once.

A user in a jokey way asked for a D beside his name as he had donated. I, also an the spirit of "humour", gave him the custom tag ;-D

Others who were on the thread at the time said "Ohh! Can I have one too?"

I, again in the spirit of "humour", said "For the next hour, anyone who donates using the classified button can choose a tag of their choice".

I thought it was "A bit of fun".

Right! Now that';s sorted I'm off to attempt to build some ajax image sliders which can take advantage of the new gallery features of WordPress 3.5. I may be some time!
