Anyone used these, do they work? Any recommendations? Some of the ones ive looked at have hefty subscriptions. Im not averse to this if they are worth it…
I have inherited a keyboard, apparently it’s a decent one. i would love to be able to play a tune on it. I don’t want to be the next Elton john or owt, but just be able to knock out a couple of familiar melodies.
Also be good to get the kids tinkling the ivories a bit too...
Both my kids go to a piano teacher for half an hour each a week.
I don't doubt that the apps work, but watching her with them she picks up on all kinds of secondary things that an app would struggle to do: sitting position, hand movements, key and pedal action, expression and interpretation etc.
An app will tell you when you play the wrong notes. A teacher will tell you why you've played the wrong notes.
I started teaching myself piano about 18 months ago. I tried one of the apps - Synthesia - and it's fine if all you want is to learn in a "monkey see, monkey do" fashion, knock out a tune or two to impress the ladies at a party, etc. but I couldn't get on with it. I found sitting down with sheet music and going through it bar-by-bar, one hand at a time was way more effective at getting the music to "stick".
