I thought the "joke" failed by being nasty, which then put it in the realms of racism. To have been a good joke, the other side should be amused too IMO.
Works the other way - I've heard the Scots described as being such bad neighbours the Romans built 2 walls to keep them out. As a Scot, I think that's funny.
