My computer recently contracted a virus thanks to me looking at thing I shouldn’t, ahem. A bit miffed as I’ve virus software but what can you do.

I’ve successfully removed the virus but in the process my computer has forgotten where everything is. In the start menu all the options are there, itunes, photos, games etc however, when I click on the tabs I’m told it’s empty. I know the files are on the PC (running windows 7) as I’ve found all the music and photos on the hard drive. Search function just tells me to get lost like it can’t be arsed, grrrrrrr!
Reckon I’m best re-formatting it?

I’m not that well versed with computers so any help is greatly received.

Search the forum for spybot and malwarebytes.
There has been a lot of this recently.

XP Home security? Malware not a virus, so your AV software can be let off the hook.

Lots of info on it here on how to fix the issues:

Though when my g/f decided to install it (pre that thread), I just create her a new 'account' on the laptop and transfered the data from the old account to the new one, rather than spend lots of time messing with the registry.
