Whats the protocol on writing on roads? Is it allowed? Tolerated?

What paint should I use 🙂

Just make sure that you are not infringing any Olympic copyright. Apparently Audi is borderline, and venn diagrams should be avoided! 😛

chalk comes off VERY quick. most (well a lot of) TDF stuff is painted, and remains in place for the rest of the year...

The bulk of this thread scores points in the STW "Olympics Whinging" event.

(it's like the football, You can score even before the opening ceremony)

A couple of cans of road marking spray paint is the stuff you want - it can be used with the can inverted for easier application
Just nip down to your local Screwfix or Tool Station for a good selection

Stays there for a lot longer if the markings I see round here (from the Vuelta) is anything to go by!

So make the painting a good one:

^ really, where? That's awesome!

And how would I go about doing a stencil like that?
(obvioulsy I dont mean to copy it.. but materials-wise I assume a big bit of paper wouldnt be strong enough to make a stencil out of.. do they use card or something? )

Thanks for the info guys. Best get meself down to wickes and see if they do any. Unfortunately the nearest screwfix to dorking is quite a way away!

Why do you want to write on the roads? Protest or support?

^^ Well, I could write something like "the Olympics is crap", but then the whole world would see what a bunch of miserable gits we are so maybe it might be nice to use the opportunity to give our amazing cyclists some support instead.

^ thanks, will check it out. ahem, allegedly its possible to get the other side of the barriers 🙂

And there is the public liabilty angle to consider. Some paints turn slippery when wet, and you wouldn't want to be responsible for that, would you?

^^^^^ Brilliant, thanks wwaswas .. using 'search by image' I managed to find this ...

The National Trust at Box Hill are apparently being quite relaxed about Tour-style graffiti on the race routes for this weekends road races. Which makes a refreshing change. I feel it’ll really add to the atmosphere. Now I’m not saying we can transform Box Hill into Alpe d’Huez but it’ll give it that big race feel. Well done to the National Trust. Sadly this is after one of the Olympic committees painted over this brilliant piece my Mau Mau.

fullysussed, most spray artists use fairly stiff, 300-400gsm card, about A3 size, and taped together so the stencil can be easily folded up for transportation.

On the top of Ditchling Beacon near the top on the small bend there is still a stencil of "Pantani" that you can just make out, that was put there years ago when the TdF came here (was it 98??)..

Go 80's dayglo Pink or Yellow I say..
